Students and faculty raised awareness for the second consecutive year
Students and faculty at Roosevelt School in River Edge donned blue on Tuesday to "Light It Up Blue" for World Autism Awareness Day and help shine a light on autism for the second year in a row. The day also had an added special meaning this year as 10-year-old Jack DeSavino accepted a proclamation from Mayor Sandy Moscaritolo and the borough council on Monday night. The proclamation declared April 2013 as National Autism Awareness Month. DeSavino, who is on the autistic spectrum, also raised awareness of autism last month when he asked guests to donate to Autism New Jersey instead of bringing gifts to his birthday party. Approximately 100 children and their parents from both River Edge and Oradell attended the celebration at Powerhouse …

Taxpayers can expect a $70 increase from River Edge school budget
Facing savings residents $4 per house, the River Edge Board of Education opted to place the additional $23,000 in state aid into the $15,658,231 budget on Wednesday night. The budget, which comes in at the 2% tax levy cap of $13,508,217, calls for a $70 increase to the average homeowner. Board members initially debated returning the additional funding to homeowners but felt that the $4 per taxpayer would not yield enough of an impact over setting it aside to help with the upcoming state mandated teacher evaluations. "I will say that when I came in here I was feeling that we should reduce the tax levy by that amount since we were ok," board member Mary Kay Buckley said. "We're never going to be fully funded. Personally if we were to not …

In the wake of the Newtown massacre, schools coping with upgrading security without going over the 2 percent cap may get relief from pending legislation.
In the wake of Newtown, schools everywhere are performing security audits and collaborating with local law enforcement to implement new security intitiatives. The River Edge School district, which presented a preliminary budget in early Feburary, intends to install additional indoor secutiry cameras in the schools. Neither the Oradell nor River Dell Boards of Education have presented their potential 2013-14 school budgets at this time. However, the question being asked by many Superintendents is how to implement new security measures and still stay within the 2 percent cap. There is a bill pending in the Assembly, A3814, that would allow schools to go over the 2 percent cap for securiity expenditures without having to go to the voters for …
