The Christie Administration released its new School Performance Reports for the 2011-2012 school year Wednesday.
Students at Oradell Public, Roosevelt and Cherry Hill elementary schools were found to be better performing than those at the Regional schools when compared to their new peer groups and the state according to the new School Performance Reports. Released Wednesday, the reports are a new version of the long-running School Reports Cards that have measured school performance on a variety of metrics since the 1990s. Oradell students academic performance is considered high when compared to their peer group (in the 73rd percentile) and statewide (92nd percentile). Roosevelt School was ranked in the 70th percentile (peer group) and 88th (statewide) for their academic achievement while Cherry Hill was 55th (peer group) and 82nd (statewide). …

State aid remains flat for Oradell and River Dell districts and both towns
For the third consecutive year, River Edge and Oradell will see no change in their municipal state aid amounts. At the same time, River Dell and Oradell school districts state aid will remain flat while the River Edge school district is expected to see a $23,483 increase in their school aid. The final state aid amounts were released late Wednesday night for municipal aid and late Thursday afternoon for school aid. Districts across New Jersey await state aid figures this week with uncertainty.
The River Dell tri-district school systems are facing the deadline to submit the 2013-2014 budget to the county next week with uncertainty as to whether $85 billion in federal "sequestration" spending cuts will be stopped by Congress before Friday and how it will impact the district. And so far, at least two out of the three districts have adopted a wait and see approach to what effects the sequestration budget cuts could bring. "River Dell does not receive significant funds from the federal government," River Dell Superintendent Patrick Fletcher said. "I am adopting a “wait and see” approach until we have a true picture." With few contested races in the borough, voters focused on River Edge Council, a Oradell seat on the Regional Board of Ed and restoring the River Edge Open Space Trust Fund
Tuesday's election may have been the last thing on many River Dell residents minds, but nonetheless, many took to the polls for what was largely an uncontested set of ballots. This year only the River Edge council and Oradell seat on the Regional Board of Education were contested. River Edge voters were also asked on a separate ballot question if they would want to renew the Open Space Trust Fund. The Republican majority was disrupted as challenger Vito Acquafredda reclaimed a seat for the Democrats to create a three-three split as he ousted Council President Paul Cordts by 396 votes. By Colleen O'Dea, NJ Spotlight School administrators’ salaries in New Jersey rose less than the typical teacher's pay over the past two years, and increases should level off for the foreseeable future as state-mandated caps on superintendents’ earnings kick in. Each of the Boards of Education will now have their election in November starting this year
With the move to November for the tri-district Board of Education elections, each school district will now place its candidate's names on the ballot this fal. Michael Gardner and Patrick Gallagher will face one another for the open three-year term. Incumbents from River Edge Joe Manzelli and Claudia O'Neill will return to the Regional Board in an uncontested race. Incumbents Katherine Norian and Christine Robertson are set to resume their seats come January while Andrew Oddo will replace Louis Ferrante. Incumbents Gyuchang Sim, Colin Busteed and Wendy Walker will all retain their seats.

Across all school districts in New Jersey, there will be an increase in state aid
After the past few years of underfunded state aid to school districts, the River Edge, Oradell and River Dell districts will be receiving a boost of 30% over last year's amount. Governor Chris Christie 2013 Budget proposal includes $7.8 billion in K-12 formula aid, an increase of $135 million over last year and part of $213 million in additional state funding for education over Fiscal Year 2012. The two K-6 districts will receive the largest percentage increase with 36.7% to River Edge and 36% to Oradell. The Regional district is set for a 23.3% increase. "It seems like they are giving back the aid slowly that was taken two years ago," Oradell Board Administrator Rita Cioppi said. "I'm happy because this will help us, help the school." …

Very disappointing report for riverdell...it is clear that the $20k per student that the taxpayers of RE and Oradell are are paying to educate these kids is not well managed. We need more accountability , where is the money going? With all the outrageous high salaries we pay most teachers and administrators, we should not be "lagging in academic performance" with respect to our peers. more ›
