River Edge Resident, Police Honored for Heroism

Several River Edge Police officers were honored for their efforts recently alongside borough resident Jay Orsino

Before a packed crowd of friends, family and colleagues, River Edge resident Jay Orsino along with _River Edge Police_ Sgt. Curt Wilhelm and Officers Michael McGinty, Michael Varrecchia and Dennis Griffith were all honored for their dedication and heroic efforts on behalf of Bergen County by Mayor Sandy Moscaritolo and County Executive Kathleen Donovan on Monday evening. Additionally, the _REPD _welcomed the promotion of Officer Gary Faustini to the rank of sergeant.  On July 22, Orsino was one of two men that _leaped into the Hackensack River_ to rescue _82-yearold Elizabeth Moore of River Edge_ after she apparently hit the wrong pedal exiting a car wash and plunging the vehicle into the river. Spotless Auto Laundries employee John Goez …

Low Generator Bid Advances River Edge Project

A higher powered generator will be installed in the coming months to cover the police station and borough hall

With hurricane season creeping closer to River Edge, a lower than anticipated bid for a 250-kilowatt generator to power Borough Hall and thePolice Department will advance the project forward. Out of four bids that were received, Vanore Electric Inc of Teterboro came in with the lowest option at $188,509 which was below the expected $190,000 estimated cost for the larger generator. The borough also solicited bids for a smaller 175-kilowatt generator for the police station as well. According to Councilman Edward Mignone, project engineer Kenneth DelPercio has thrown his support behind the bid and believes the council should go forward with this project and install one generator for both buildings. Man in Intensive Care After Being Struck by Car on Rt. 4

Paramus man was struck while crossing Route 4; investigation still ongoing

A 44-year-old Paramus man is currently in the intensive care unit at Hackensack University Medical Center following Wednesday night's traffic accident on Rt. 4 near the River Edge/Paramus border. According to River Edge Police Chief Thomas Cariddi, the incident occured around 9:12pm Wednesday when the pedestrian attempted to cross Rt. 4 from the eastbound side to the westbound side. Upon reaching the westbound side, he was struck by a vehicle and hit the windshield before being thrown to the ground. "He was treated at the scene by members of the Paramus Emergency Medical Services and advance life support paramedics from Hackensack University Medical Center," Cariddi said. Bank Robber Nabbed One Week After River Edge Heist

Darrel Johnson, 29, of Englewood was arrested and charged for the June 6 Hudson City Savings Bank robbery

Following a weeklong investigation into the June 6 Hudson City Savings Bank robbery, River Edge Police arrested Darrel Johnson, 29, of Englewood late Wednesday at a Hackensack apartment. Johnson, who has been charged with one count of robbery, was remanded to the Bergen County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail. During the robbery, Johnson allegedly entered the bank  and presented a bank teller with a note which contained a specific demand for cash, and had indicated that he was armed with a weapon. He had fled the bank on foot towards Hackensack with an undisclosed amount of cash. VIDEO: River Dell Officers Carry a Torch for Special Olympics

Members of the River Edge and Oradell police departments participated in the Law Enforcement Torch Run on Friday morning

New Jersey's bravest traded in their uniforms for running shoes on Friday during the annual Law Enforcement Torch Fun for NJ Special Olympics. And once again this year, local officers hit the streets in Oradell as part of the 30 mile Northeast Bergen County route. Oradell Patrolmen Richard Liguori represented the borough's DARE program by running alongside River Edge Officer Joseph Zemaites who cycled during the Torch Run. Approximately 150 officers would carry the torch from the ShopRite in Northvale to the entrance of Hudson County Park to kickoff the Summer Special Olympics competitions. The Special Olympics Torch Run began in 1984 where officers ran the 43 miles from Liberty State Park in Jersey City to Rutgers Stadium in New Brunswick…

Bank Robber Takes off with Undisclosed Cash Amount from River Edge Bank

River Edge Police along with County police responded to a bank robbery at Hudson City Savings Bank on Main Street

This Wednesday afternoon, units from the River Edge Police Department, Bergen County K9 and Bergen County Sheriff's Crime Scene Unit responded to a possible bank robbery at Hudson City Savings Bank on Main Street, according to police. The alleged suspect, described as a 6'0" dark skin male entered Hudson City Savings at 11:30am wearing a brown hooded jacket, glasses and material covering the lower portion of his face, according to River Edge Police Chief Thomas Cariddi. "The man presented a note with specific instructions to the teller for money," Cariddi said. "He was last scene heading westbound on Main Street on foot." Bergen County Warrant Sweep Nets River Edge Man on Drug Charges

Prosecutor’s Office investigators seized cash, drugs in six county warrant sweep, authorities say

A 21-year-old River Edge man was among 20 people arrested Thursday by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotics Task Force in a drug warrant sweep spanning six counties, authorities said. The arrests came as a result of undercover drug investigations the task force conducted over the past 12 months, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said in a statement. Investigators seized two pounds of marijuana, more than one-half ounce of cocaine and approximately 100 pills of prescriptions drugs, along with about $3,200 in cash, the prosecutor said. Dispose your unwanted, unused and expired medicines safely at the River Edge or Oradell Police Departments on Saturday.

The River Edge and Oradell Police Departments will be participating in Operation Take Back New Jersey on Saturday, April 28, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Operation Take Back New Jersey gives residents an opportunity to rid their homes of unused, unwanted, or expired medications by turning them in to law enforcement officials who will dispose of the substances in a safe and non-hazardous manner. Safe disposal of unwanted medications prevents them from coming into the hands of children or others for whom they were not prescribed, thereby avoiding the possibility of accidental overdoses. River Edge Pair Charged With Drug Distribution

Three men, including two from River Edge, have been charged with distributing ounces of marijuana, authorities said Friday. River Edge residents Zachary Garry, 19 and Joseph Delguercio, 20, along with Reagen Owimrin, 21, of Saddle Brook, were charged after a month-long undercover investigation, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said in a news release. The investigation began in late January following Garry's sale of one ounce of marijuana to an undercover detective in the Bergen County Narcotic Task Force in River Edge, authorities said. Groundbreaking Occasion As REPD Install First Female Officer

The REPD welcomed new patrol officers Renata Sanches and Anthony Roman

Monday evening before a crowded room of residents, friends, family and the River Edge Police Department, the borough welcomed its newest patrol officers to the force during a groundbreaking event. Officer Renata Sanches became the first female officer in the 100-year history of the borough. "We are incredibly fortunate to have so many talented, well trained officers in the department," Police Chief Thomas Cariddi said. "I am proud tonight to welcome our newest officers.
