River Edge and Oradell Police Departments join forces to offer the first-ever Junior Police Academy.
Chief Tom Cariddi of the River Edge Police Department announced that the River Edge and Oradell police departments are combining forces and resources to offer its first-ever Junior Police Academy this summer. This just may be the perfect way to get those hard to please tweens and teens unplugged and outside keeping them occupied for a few days this summer. The junior cadets will partake in physical fitness daily, learn about the police department, participate in demonstrations, go on field trips and more. "The goal of our Junior Police Academy is to create an environment where students learn respect, discipline, team work, motivation and dedication," Cariddi said. Sgt. William Haggis has retired from the River Edge Police Department after 30 years of service.
The River Edge Mayor and Council presented police Sergeant William Haggis with a plaque commemorating his 30 years of service to the residents of River Edge. Surrounded by his wife and children, his parents, family and friends, Haggis dedicated the plaque to his late sister, Alexis.

Vincent Ariano of Dumont is the third rookie patrol officer to join the River Edge Police Department in 2012
With heavy retirement around the corner, the River Edge Police Department had something to celebrate as Dumont-native Vincent Ariano became the department's third rookie of the year. He was officially sworn in on Monday night. "It's been my pleasure to know Vincent and the Ariano family for a number of years," REPD Chief Thomas Cariddi said. "Once question I know Vincent's parents have always been asked is how he turned out so well. They have usually responded ' I don't kniw, just luck I guess.' I think they did something right and we're very lucky to add Vincent to our force." With two new hires and the search for a third patrol officer nearly complete, REPD will look to proactively recruit additional officers in advance of several upcoming retirements
With the addition of patrol officers Renata Sanches and Anthony Roman to the roster since February, the River Edge Police Department boasts a 20-member compliment and will soon add another as a new rookie is expected to join the force prior to the end of the year. Now the department's recruitment efforts are expected to carry into the new year as River Edge faces the prospects of seven officers reaching retirement age in 2013. According to Police Chief Thomas Cariddi, at least two officers have indicated they will retire at that point. "Moving forward in 2013 the department is in the position that over the next year I have seven officers who will reach retirement age," Cariddi said. Over 300 children at the River Edge Summer Camp learned about what goes into becoming a firefighter, police officer and EMT
An annual favorite for campers during the River Edge Summer Camp at Veteran's Memorial Park has always been career day when members of the River Edge Fire Department, Police Department and Volunteer Ambulance Service come down with their rigs and cruisers. This year over 300 youth attended career day to hear Firefighter Martin Blech explain the role of a firefighter, the equipment they use and general fire safety. Joan Daly took campers into the back of the ambulance rig while Patrol Officer Joseph Zemaites showed off cruiser, his equipment and taught campers basic drill movements.

After hiring two new patrol officers earlier this year, the River Edge PD will seek a third entry-level officer
With two new patrol officers in the ranks of the River Edge Police Department since February, Chief Thomas Cariddi broached the topic of beginning the search for a third patrol officer to fill an upcoming anticipated vacancy. "We will have an anticipated vacancy we'll be facing in the future," Cariddi said. "My recommendation is to initiate a hiring procedual for a new officer. It would be an issue of staffing and a matter of economics. I could fill the position on a day-to-day basis and incure overtime exposure a great deal of the time. I would rather have an entry-level officer than expending a top salary officer with time-and-a-half overtime costs." As a resident of River Edge for over 40 years and a past volunteer with the Fire Department and Ambulance Corps, I have seen our police in action.
