River Edge Remembers 9/11 First Responders through Memorial Dedication

After receiving a steel I-beam 11 months ago, River Edge officially dedicated its First Responder's Emergency Memorial outside of Borough Hall

Eleven years have passed since the World Trade Center towers came down and River Edge lost five residents. It's been 11 months since a steel I-beam from one of the towers was brought to the borough for a First Responder's Memorial outside of borough hall - the Memorial was dedicated Tuesday afternoon as residents, friends, family and volunteers crowded together in memory. "FDR referred to Dec. 7, 1941 as a 'date which would live in infamy' and Sept. 11, 2001 is our generations Dec. 7," River Edge PBA member and Police Officer Joseph Starost said. "Everyone remembers where they were when they heard about the attacks, know someone who died or someone who was impacted by it. This steel is a symbol, a stark reminer of what happened that day." …

The Port Authority Police Department lost 37 members of the service that day, including Explosive Detection Team…   more ›

Emergency Responders Memorial Dedication Coming This Month

The River Edge First Responder's Memorial featuring a World Trade Center steel beam will be dedicated this month

Eleven months ago, members of the River Edge Fire, Police, and Ambulance traversed their way to a JFK Airport hanger and back with a steel I-beam from the World Trade Center courtesy of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as a way to remember those emergency service responders who also lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. This month, the Local PBA 201's First Responder's Memorial will be dedicated in their honor after months of preparation. The $8,000 memorial, completely funded through donations and the PBA, calls for a design plans created by Let It Grow where the 16-foot long steel I-beam runs vertically to display the cut out cross outside of borough hall. "We're going to remove two trees outside of borough hall," …

First Responders Memorial Downgraded Due to Lack of Funds

The River Edge PBA 201's First Responder's Memorial outside of Borough Hall will be a little smaller than initially planned

As less dollars trickled in than expected following the River Edge Local PBA 201's April fundraiser concert for the First Responder's Memorial outside of Borough Hall, the design around the World Trade Center steel I-beam has been scaled back. "A couple of things have changed since we were last here," Sgt. Curt Wilhelm said. "When we began looking at pricing to remove the wooden retaining wall and replacing it with pavers, the costs were adding up. The fundraiser brought in less than anticipated." Now the footprint will be reduced to allow for less invasive changes to borough hall along with removing a pine tree in the center to make way for the steel I-beam. Sgt. Curt Wilhelm and Officer Marc Abate had initially proposed three locations …
