The final state aid amounts were released late Wednesday night for municipal aid and late Thursday afternoon for school aid. Districts across New Jersey await state aid figures this week with uncertainty.
The River Dell tri-district school systems are facing the deadline to submit the 2013-2014 budget to the county next week with uncertainty as to whether $85 billion in federal "sequestration" spending cuts will be stopped by Congress before Friday and how it will impact the district. And so far, at least two out of the three districts have adopted a wait and see approach to what effects the sequestration budget cuts could bring. "River Dell does not receive significant funds from the federal government," River Dell Superintendent Patrick Fletcher said. "I am adopting a “wait and see” approach until we have a true picture." The districts are also waiting to hear from Governor Christie who will make his state budget address Tuesday. Each …

With few contested races in the borough, voters focused on River Edge Council, a Oradell seat on the Regional Board of Ed and restoring the River Edge Open Space Trust Fund
Tuesday's election may have been the last thing on many River Dell residents minds, but nonetheless, many took to the polls for what was largely an uncontested set of ballots. This year only the River Edge council and Oradell seat on the Regional Board of Education were contested. River Edge voters were also asked on a separate ballot question if they would want to renew the Open Space Trust Fund. The Republican majority was disrupted as challenger Vito Acquafredda reclaimed a seat for the Democrats to create a three-three split as he ousted Council President Paul Cordts by 396 votes. Acquafredda garnered 2,415 votes with Cordts trailing with 2,019. Acquafredda, who has served on the Regional Board of Education since 2002, will now step …

The Regional Board of Education voted down hiring an academic coach to tutor students after school along town lines Monday night
With gaps in test scores between River Dell students and their District Factor Group (DFG) counterparts and results from the most recent survey showing that parents would want their students to have mathematics tutoring once a week, the River Dell Board of Education voted along town lines, 5-3, with Paul Barnes (Oradell) crossing the border to decline investigating the creation of an academic coach position. The academic coach position, proposed by Board member Michael Chakansky, would have called for the district to hire a teacher that would be available for high school students for several hours after the school day who needed extra assistance in mathematics. "This was brought out by my personal experience of looking at tutors," …

Former head soccer coach Kevin Sabella was approved as an assistant softball coach for the spring while AJ Letizia will join the Hawks football coaching staff as an assistant. Michael I agree. So now we have another Democrat in local office, who will advocate more spending. The local Democrats whole platform is to apply for more grants, and support our volunteers, apparently they believe that is all it will take to get RE back on a firm financial footing. Also Mr. Acquafreeda was on the RD BOE during the referendum process, a 26 million dollar expenditure. I do not …   more ›
