River Dell Setter's Club Team Heads to National Championship in June

Kalette deMarrais and the Digs Red 17 club volleyball team recently earned a spot in the USA Volleyball's National Championships

If spiking the competition during the winter in Washington, DC was not enough, the Digs Red 17 club volleyball team, featuring River Dell Lady Hawk setter Kalette deMarrais, recently earned a spot in the USA Volleyball's National Championships. Over Easter weekend, the team competed at USA Volleyball's Northeast Qualifier in Philadelphia, one of a few qualifying tournaments held nationally to qualify for USA Volleyball's National Championships.  The DIGS 17 Red team played in the elite Open Division and finished in fourth place overall after falling to North Texas club TAV 17 Black.  To qualify, the Digs beat several powerhouse teams from California, Texas, and Pennsylvania among others. DIGS Red Spikes Competition in DC

The club team of North Jersey high school athletes recently claimed the Capitol Hill Classic tournament title this past week

The DIGS 17 Red Club Volleyball team, comprised primarily of local north jersey high school girls, continues to raise the bar on the East Coast. Three tournaments to date in this Club Season and three first place finishes! The most recent occurred over the Presidents’ Day weekend in Washington, D.C. as the club team competed in the 17 Open Division of the Capitol Hill Classic, a major East Coast Volleyball tournament. There were 48 teams from 10 different states competing in this Elite Division. The DIGS team won every match compiling a total game record of 18-1 on their way to winning the championship. Nia Reed (IHA) was named tournament “MVP” and “Best Attacker” and Mallary McFadden (Albert Magnus) was named tournament “Best Server”. …

Lady Hawks Runners Bring Home Medal

From the Penn Relays and back to Oradell, its been a busy week for Bergen and River Dell

For three days in Philadelphia, Pa., the best track stars from the tri-state descended upon Franklin Field for the Penn Relays and a shot to return home victorious. On the first day, the Lady Hawks 4x400 relay squad (Sam Schleiger, Paige Fernandez, Melissa Gibbons and Jamie Woods) won their heat placing first in 4:02.86 to advance closer to a repeat title. Schleiger has been part of the relay team since freshman year and is a three time winner, Fernandez and Gibbons have won twice and this is Woods first year competing at Penn. In the 4x100 relay (Kalene Marulis, Nicole Burrowes, Noreen Byrne, Marina Reilly), the Lady Hawks finished fourth in 52.39. Softball Catches a Break While Crusaders Continue to Roll

Week two for spring athletes still has Bergen Catholic on a roll while Lady Hawks finally caught a break

Bergen Catholic has been on a roll this week with baseball capping a pair of victories in five innings: 14-3 over Kennedy and 14-1 over Hackensack. AJ Gallager has been the hot hitter with plenty of RBI's, double and triple to bring the Crusaders to a 5-1 record. Volleyball and golf are still undefeated as Brendan McCullagh, Kirk Nouhan and Hacik Aslangolu spiked their way to finish off Don Bosco in three, 23-25, 25-16, 25-21, but later fell to St. Joseph of Metuchen 21-25, 19-25 match on Tuesday during a quad meet. Bergen was able to topple CBA in three, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22 but came up short to Southern Regional, 13-25, 17-25. McCullagh had 70 kills, Nouhan 98 assists and Arslanoglu 30 digs for the week. County Tournaments in Full Swing Sunday

Field hockey is home in opening round; girls soccer is in Round of 16

In most places Sunday is a day of rest, but at River Dell it will be a day of activity as the third seeded field hockey squad and 11th seeded girls soccer take to the field in the Bergen County Tournament. Coming off their stunning shut-out over Wayne Valley on Tuesday and a 2-0 rout of Hackensack on Thursday, the field hockey squad (4-5-1) is set to take on a familiar foe - the Demarest Norsewomen, seeded sixth, at 10am in Oradell. These two teams met in September with River Dell coming out on top, 4-1. The prize for winning is a semifinals date against Northern Highlands who trounced the Lady Hawks, 5-0 in the second game of the season. Raiders Volleyball Topple Lady Hawks in Counties

Sixth seeded River Dell dropped first set, and even after battling back in the second, came up short

The River Dell Lady Hawks fell victim to Ramapo in the county quarterfinals at Old Tappan on Oct. 27, losing 25-13 and 25-23.  After building a 15-9 lead in the second, the Hawks saw their lead disappear along with their dreams of a county championship. Ramapo won the first set easily 25-13 then came back to win the second after trailing by six in the middle of the set.  "We just know how to battle back," said Coach Dave Van Hook.  "We're just used to it right now, we're not gonna give up." The Raiders battled back to tie the game at 17, then ended a back-and-forth battle and putting away the Hawks 25-23.
