An off-leash dog park at Van Saun Park is on the way late autumn
As the days get shorter and the temperatures cool down, Bergen County's canines and their owners are counting down until the under construction Van Saun Park dog park opens for use. Work on leveling the ground began in mid-September and work is expected to be completed by late fall. The $50,000 County-funded project includes fencing and running a water line to provide refreshment for the canine customers, in a secluded spot near Parking Lot 4 in Area E which is not far from the S.O.S. Gardens and Continental Avenue entrance in River Edge. There is a possiblity for benches for owners to sit while their dogs run around. The dog run should be ready by late fall as the County had to complete work on the renovated Ridgewood Dog Park first. The …

County will fund $50,000 cost to create a dog park on the River Edge side of Van Saun Park
Bergen County's furry four-legged friends will be getting a new place to romp by this fall as construction work on a dog run at Van Saun Park will begin in July. The $50,000 project includes fencing, benches and running a water line to provide refreshment for the canine customers, in a secluded spot near Parking Lot 4 in Area E which is not far from the S.O.S. Gardens and Continental Avenue entrance in River Edge. Work to get the bark park created began with an online petition that garnered 230 signatures from residents not only in River Edge but also in nearby towns as well. The governing bodies in Oradell, Paramus and New Milford along with River Edge approved resolutions in support of the Van Saun dog park as it would allow not only …

Possible location scouted out this week for an off-leash dog park at Van Saun Park
A petition that garnered over 200 signatures in favor of an off-leash dog park in Van Saun Park recently reached Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan's desk and after a recent review of the Park, awaits word if County funding is available. "I met with Bergen County Executive Donavan on Monday and hand delivered the Proposal including the Petition, Resolutions from River Edge, Oradel, Paramus and photos, of various locations," River Edge Mayor Sandy Moscaritolo said. Moscaritolo recently met with Bergen County Director of Park, Ronald Kistner to locate a suitable location, away from the Zoo and pond with adequate buffers. County residents can take part in online petition for dog park in Van Saun
River Edge resident John Fugazzie got the ball rolling for the creation of an off-leash dog park in Van Saun Park last spring. Recently, River Edge Mayor Sandy Moscaritolo has picked up where Fugazzie started by creating an online petition for county residents. "Interest has been growing of late to create an off leash Dog Park at Van Saun County Park," Moscaritolo said. "Van Saun County Park serves the residents of Bergen County, in particular the Boroughs of River Edge, Oradell and Paramus. However Van Saun Park has no facility to allow pet owners to socialize or dogs to exercise off-leash." Along with allowing owners and dogs to socialize, an off-leash dog park offers senior citizens a place to exercise their companions, promotes …

Van Saun Park has changed much over the decades.
Van Saun Park is a Bergen County park that straddles Paramus and River Edge near Forest Avenue. This park has a memorial tree grove, a duck pond, gardens, wilderness, places to play, picnic areas, and a zoo. Van Saun Park has been renovated from one end to the other over the years. The south end of Van Saun Park abuts Howland Avenue. The DWI Memorial Tree Grove replaces the grassy field that once stood there. This memorial has over three dozen trees, each one with the name of a DWI victim. The fact that there are enough trees to make a grove is a somber reminder of how many people drunk driving kills. The nearby duck pond underwent some changes several years ago. A riparian buffer and a ban on feeding the birds now fight eutrophication by …
