Locally owned businesses across the county are benefitting from Small Business Saturday
One day after the biggest shopping day of the holiday season, small businesses in Bergen County continued to see an uptick in sales as consumers continued to spend and support their local businesses as part of AMEX's Small Business Saturday. In Englewood, shop owners saw a slow start to the day as customers waited until late morning to start hitting the streets. At the same time, city employees were able to dedicate time to decorating lamppoles and utility work continued on Dean Street. "I think AMEX should be commended for honoring small businesses in the downtown districts," Marla Weinglast of Complements said. "We're seeing more customers want to support their local businesses because they know the owners and sales team on a personal …

Just what is Small Business Saturday and why should you support it in RiverDell?
Big name national retailers take the spotlight on Black Friday as their deep price cuts pull in shoppers in droves. What about those mom-and-pop businesses all over RiverDell and beyond that are the backbone of America’s economy? Just when do they get their day? That’s basically the question that was asked back in 2010 when the concept of Small Business Saturday was born. Small Business Saturday is “a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities,” the U.S. Small Business Administration explains on its website. American Express gets the credit for founding the shopping holiday, which got its official start on Nov. 27, 2010, according to the Small Business Saturday Facebook page. Celebrating its third …

Start your holiday shopping at locally owned stores during Small Business Saturday.
Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in RiverDell. Last year, 100 million people nationwide participated in Small Business Saturday by shopping at locally owned stores to help boost the economy and their communities. Tell us in this poll.
The day after Thanksgiving—“Black Friday”—unofficially marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season. Area stores, shopping centers and malls often open well before dawn that day. People form lines outside of stores and shopping malls in places like Paramus and New York City in the middle of the night. While these stores are often the most popular to shop at, have the most amount of merchandise to pick from, and offer sales unseen at other times during the year, small businesses may also offer a lot for shoppers on that day and throughout the holiday shopping season. Do you plan on visiting any local, River Edge or Oradell businesses on Black Friday? How about during the rest of holiday shopping season? If so, which ones? Weigh in on…
Give a shout out to your favorite RiverDell business
No doubt about it: There are a lot of big, big businesses out there. And, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Many of these large businesses provide us with some of our most needed services. Many of them employ our friends, our neighbors, our families–and, for that, we are grateful. Still, there is something about a Mom-and-Pop Shop, the local place, the place where everyone recognizes your face. You know more of the money you spend there has a better chance of staying in your community. Not only do these places employ your friends, your neighbors, your families, a lot of these businesses are owned by them. Whatever your reason, there is something special about small business. Thankfully, those in RiverDell who support small business don't…

Oradell-based Faustini's Institute of Martial Arts focuses on the big picture
Tucked away just off Kinderkamack Road overlooking the Oradell Reservoir on one side and the historic Blauvelt Mansion on the other, Faustini's Institute of Martial Arts has become more than merely a dojo for students to learn martial arts and self-defense skills over the past 30 years. Now the family-owned institute led by Richard Faustini has begun to focus more on the big picture of fitness by including: kettlebell training, yoga/pilates, strength and agility training for young athletes and will be instituting a program for special needs students in the coming months. "We're more than just a martial arts school," Faustini said. "We look at the big picture and how to help people strive for and accomplish their goals. The stronger someone…

Riverside Oral Surgery recently expanded its office space
Several years ago Dr. Jason M. Auerbach left the glitz and glam of Park Avenue in Manhattan to start his own practice in River Edge. And since then he has not looked back - instead he has continued to look forward and expanded his Riverside Oral Surgery facility on the corner of Kinderkamack Road and Main Street. "Since coming here in 2007, the community has been amazing to me," Auerbach said. "River Edge is an ideal place to raise a family and a small business. It's very towncentric and welcoming since day one." Business has been so good lately, that Auerbach had to expand his facility to include an aesthetician room and another for major impant surgery. Riverside Oral Surgery offers the following procedures on site: Dental Implants, …
