Patch previews this week's upcoming events
Several teams earned their berths in the state basketball and hockey tournaments while individual wrestlers are heading to Atlantic City all looking for titles. All basketball squads and Bergen hockey will start their postseason run at home before heading out on the road. The Lady Hawks and Golden Hawks will play in a double-header Monday evening with the fifth seeded girls seeking to return to the sectional final with a 5pm face-off with Pascack Hills, 12th seed. Last year, the Cowgirls rode to victory and claimed the N1G2 sectional title from defending champion River Dell. The boys enter the N1G2 race in sixth and are looking to make a deep run, starting with 11th seeded Kinnelon Colts at 7pm. But they will face an uphill battle with a …

School elections will be held in November following a 5-2 approval vote
Following the most recent news that the school district will have to face cutting two teachers for a balanced budget, the River Edge Board of Education voted 5-2 to move the school elections to November on Wednesday night. The lone 'nay' votes were Shawn Kucharski and Paris Myers. The preliminary school budget calls for $310,613 in state aid, similar to what was received in the prior year. The district was given $169,228 following Gov. Chris Christie's 2011 State of the Budget address and then an additional $141,365 over the summer. The extra state aid, all $141,365 was returned to the voters as a tax break. "There is still a huge concern if we don't get as much state aid," Board Administrator Debbie Trainor said. The Oradell Board of Education held a special session on Wednesday to approve a preliminary budget
The Oradell Board of Education held a special session on Wednesday to discuss and approve the preliminary 2011-12 school year budget. And with the new 2% tax levy cap in place, Oradell residents may see an increase of $65.24 on the average assessed home of $531,810. Interim Superintendent Dr. Maria Nuccatelli spoke at length about the items in the budget, emphasizing that much of the budget will be similar to 2010-2011, and that class sizes will stay the same. There will, however, be a 3.7% increase in tax revenue that will be occurring. This number, however, will not be seen in its entirety by the citizens of Oradell. Rather, they will have a new tax levy of 2%, which comes to a total of an approximate average assessment of $65.24 per …
