River Dell Educators Help Create Teen Conference at BCC

High school students from around Northern New Jersey spent all-day Friday at Bergen Community College learning the benefits and options of a STEM career

Leaders from President Obama to Warren Buffett have stressed the need to educate more American students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields in order to keep America competitive in the global economy. On Friday afternoon, Bergen Community College hosted its first annual Teen STEM Day to offer Northern New Jersey high school students the opportunity to learn about different career paths. The day-long conference had students attend hands-on workshops which demonstrated how industries use science, technology, engineering and math to answer the needs and demands of daily living. River Dell's Rookie Robotics Team Competes Saturday

The Hypnotic Robotics team will compete with 47 other high schools in FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) held at NJIT

This Saturday, the River Dell High School STEM club robotics team, dubbed Hypnotic Robotics, will compete in their first statewide competition ever.  Actually, this is the first time they even could. The team was formed only about 6 months ago by Physics teacher Edward Houston.  “We’ve come a long way since September,” he says. “The students are really enjoying themselves and throwing themselves into it.” The annual competition held at NJIT is called the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) and every year, there is a different playing field and rules to adhere to. No one knows what those rules are before September, so every new school year, teams across the state have to start, more or less, from scratch. This year, robots score points by performing…
