Judge Recommends Regional Funding Change for River Dell; Awaits Commissioner's OK

If approved by Education Commissioner Christopher Cerf, River Edge residents would begin paying a greater portion of the levy over a two-year phased in period

Almost nine months since the initial arguments were given over a two-day span before Administrative Law Judge Leslie Z. Celentano, the boroughs of Oradell and River Edge have received an answer to the ongoing River Dell Regional school district funding inequality fight. Celentano has recommended that the state change the funding formula for River Dell to an 80-20 mix formula and placing the majority of the tax burden for the district on River Edge. Her decision called for a two-year phase in period. Oradell which sends approximately 653 students to the River Dell district spends about $20,360 per pupil. River Edge, with 1,024 students, pays about $14,330 for each of its students. According to James Kirtland, a CPA who testified on behalf …

@Bruce - absolutely not true. Funding for schools is a completely separate tax from funding for the town. If the commissioner approves this recommendation, you will see a deduction in your Oradell taxes amounting to $622 (for the average valued home). Of course if your home is above or below average, the amount will proportionately adjust. These funds will not cross into the towns budget.   more ›

Team Farrell Returns with Greater Numbers to River Edge Run

Over 200 runners joined Team Farrell in the River Edge Run last year in memory of Steve Farrell. The team is expected to be even larger this year.

While the pain of losing a father and husband may never fully go away, the Farrell family in River Edge are once again organizing one of the largest groups of runners for the annual River Edge Run as Team Farrell and The Melanoma Research Foundation join forces to raise funds for melanoma research in memory of Stephen Farrell. Farrell, who lost his fight with melanoma cancer in 2010, was a vibrant, active member of the community serving as a volunteer coach for the River Edge Recreation Basketball, AAU Basketball, River Dell Soccer, River Dell Blackhawks, River Edge Little League, Regal Basketball, and Softball teams. He was also president of the Farrell Media Group in River Edge. "Last year we had over 200 people walking and running in …

Low Increase Municipal Budget Approval Pending for River Edge

A public hearing yielded zero questions from residents on Monday night. The 2013 municipal budget will be adopted later this month

Later this month, River Edge officials will approve the 2013 municipal budget with the lowest residentail tax increase for the past few years. The Mayor and Council held a public hearing on the budget Monday night but yielded zero questions from the packed Council Chambers at the time. The $14.4 million budget calls for an $11.9 million tax levy which will be broken down into a $77 increase for the average homeowner. In prior years, taxpayers were hit by a $234 increase in 2011 and then $140 in 2012 along with borough employees forced to take furlough days two years ago. The currently proposed 2013 budget does not include any furloughs for the second year. "This is the lowest increase in several years," Mayor Sandy Moscaritolo said. "And …

Newest River Edge Pizza Kitchen Celebrates Ribbon Cutting

Open on Kinderkamack Road since early February, River Edge Pizza Kitchen recently celebrated its ribbon cutting ceremony

Having opened just before the Super Bowl, River Edge Pizza Kitchen on Kinderkamack Road recently celebrated its official ribbon cutting ceremony last week. Owned by longtime borough residents Roberto and Francine Maglocchetti, the couple took over the space vacated by Forero's New York Gourmet Pizzeria after an eight-year break from the pizza business. The Maglocchetti's previously owned Roberto's Pizza further north on Kinderkamack Road. Along with usual pizza kitchen fare like pizzas, pasta and heroes, the Maglocchetti's have also broadened their menu with gluten-free and vegan options for diners to choose from. Democrats Put Forth Solo River Edge Candidate, None in Oradell

River Edge and Oradell council candidates filed their petitions to run in the June primary.

For the third straight year, Oradell's incumbent Republican council members will face an uncontested race as the Democratic party did not put forth any candidates for the June primary. In River Edge, only one Democrat filed to challenge two sitting councilmen. All candidates filed their petitions prior to the 4 p.m. deadline Monday for the June 4 primary election. River Edge Democrat Chairwoman Ellen Busteed is the lone candidate to face incumbent Councilmen Alphonse Bartelloni and Edward Mignone this fall. Busteed, who sits on the borough Planning Board and is a member of the Bergen County League of Women Voters, is a former marketing professional. Bartelloni and Mignone were elected to office in November 2010 after unseating Tom Smith …

River Edge Kills Duplex Ordinance without a Vote

The Mayor and Council opted to forego a public hearing on the proposed ordinance, effectively killing it in the process

Park Avenue residents in River Edge are breathing easier now that the borough governing body has once again abandoned a proposed duplex ordinance. The Mayor and Council had scheduled a public hearing on the conditional use zoning change for Monday night, but opted to forego the public hearing and kill the ordinance in the process. A public hearing was required prior to a vote and by not holding the hearing, the borough was effectively voting against moving forward. "I want to thank the governing body for finally listening to us," Park Avenue resident Jim Miller said. "I just hope this ordinance does not get reintroduced as it seems we have to come out every two years to fight this battle. I'm tired of that, please leave us alone." The …

First, I have only proved MY point.. not GoHawks. Go ask any realtor, how many 3br homes in River Edge have been sold to a 'single person'. No kids in the family. They will tell you emphatically 'NONE'. In my 12-13 years of real estate experience I have seen NO childless families buy in this town. Our home prices are higher because of the school system. No childless couple is buying a home to be …   more ›

Tentative Autumn Date Set for River Edge Library Roof Replacement

The roof, which has been extended four times already, will need to be completely replaced

Considered in "dire need" of replacement due to the current EPDM (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) single-ply rubber membrane failing, the  River Edge Library roof replacement project will now have a tentative autumn start date. The estimated $250,000 project had to be pushed back to September as the actual funding would not be available to the borough until mid-June. Construction plans are expected to be completed this spring and bid out over the late spring/early summer months. "I am prepared to start construction drawings at any time," architect Peter Pulice said. "There is zero life to that roof with excessive ponding, the membranes are in bad shape, joint failures and the mechanical equipment is not elevated high enough. The metal…

Now Entering "Joe Maugeri Crossing" as Council Set to Honor Borough Resident

Two honorary street signs should be installed near Cherry Hill by the end of the school year honoring longtime crossing guard Joe Maugeri

After celebrating his 90th birthday and being honored by the River Edge Board of Education for his years of service to the district, Joe Maugeri will soon be honored once again. This time with permament street signs parking his crosswalk post at Cherry Hill School as "Joe Maugeri Crossing" The borough Mayor and Council approved the plan at a previous meeting and will look to have it completed prior to the end of the school year. The initial suggestion to honor Maugeri with the signs came from Cherry Hill student Julia Panchi, her classmates Andrea Lisboano, Toni Ann Galgiostro and their teacher Robert Hall.  The three students wrote a letter to the governing body pitching the idea and later spoke with Mayor Sandy Moscaritolo and …

That's a well deserved honor. Joe served his country with honor and distinction and his generation, the GREATEST GENERATION, is still giving. One can see that he really cares about kids and is an asset to River Edge. Congratulations Mr. Maugeri. Sgt. M. Barry # 195 Port Authority of NY & NJ Police Department (PATH)   more ›

Letter: Park Avenue Residents Address Council on Duplex Issue

The following letter was read during the March 25 Mayor and Council meeting in River Edge by Park Avenue residents

Last Thursday we came to the Planning Board and listened carefully. And while the decision made came as a disappointment to our community, it also served to coalesce our understanding of a political process which seems astray. The purpose of the Planning Board meeting was whether this ordinance conforms to the borough’s masterplan and the questions asked by both the Board members and the public, demonstrated many issues. One neighbor held up the Land Use Map as bound into the masterplan and pointed out how the area is meant to be single family residential and read aloud from the masterplan: “The residential land use plan proposed no new areas for single-family or multi-family development. All existing residential neighborhoods are to be …
