"Perfect Storm" Causes $257 Regional Tax Hike to Oradell Residents

Following each borough's reassessments, Oradell taxpayers will see a tax hike under the Regional school budget while River Edge homeowners will see a reduction

For the coming school year, Oradell taxpayers can expect a tax hike under the approved $30.8 million River Dell Regional School budget for 2013-14. At the same time, River Edge residents will see a reduction in their portion of the tax levy. The $26.9 million tax levy, which comes in at the state mandated 2% tax levy cap, calls for a $257 increase to the average Oradell homeowner while River Edge taxpayers will see a $19 reduction. "The perfect storm hit after Trenton approved the reassessments," Board Administrator Thomas Bonfiglio said. "The River Edge percentage share went down while Oradell's went up. But by the 2014-15 school year, everything should equal back out again." To combat a large number of tax appeals, both towns performed …

River Dell Actors Take on Period Fairytale

The drama club presents their spring musical "Once Upon a Mattress", March 21-23 at the high school

Made famous by the likes of Carol Burnett and Bernadette Peters in the 1970s, the River Dell High School drama club will now put their own spin on "Once Upon a Mattress." The annual spring musical is a retelling of the classic fairytale of the Princess and the Pea and will be performed Thursday through Saturday at the high school. “We wanted to make a contrast between this year and last year, co-director Brian Reich said. "Last year was Willy Wonka and it was no props, rudimentary costumes, using the open stage. This year we wanted to have a traditional musical with costumes, props, and also the style of the music is a lot different; it is an old term musical comedy. Plus, it is really really funny.” "Mattress" is set in the fictional …

Crusaders Nab Region 2 Titles, Hawks Come Up Just Short

Bergen Catholic dominated during the Region 2 tournament while River Dell struggled in the later rounds

As River Dell's DJ Tirelli and nine Bergen Catholic Crusaders battle the best of the state in Atlantic City today for a state individual title, Patch takes a look at how they got there from the Region 2 tournament. Tirelli won his first match of the tournament when he pinned Michael Foca of Hackensack in under 30 seconds during the quarterfinals but later ran into trouble in the semifinals when facing Don Bosco's Sam Cali. Tirelli trailed early and was ultimately unable to make up enough points to move into the finals as he fell 9-1. Facing Matt Murphy (Northern Highlands) in the third place consolation, Tirelli came out fast and hard, pinning Murphy in 2:23 for a third place finish and his spot in Atlantic City. The Hawks got off to a …

Regional Budget Includes $1.2 Million in Savings over Next Decade

The River Dell Board of Education's $30 million budget for the 2013-14 school year will begin an 11-year process to save taxpayers $1.2 million

Over the next 11 years, River Edge and Oradell taxpayers will see approximately $1.2 million in savings through the Regional School Budget. The district introduced its $30 million budget for 2013-14 on Monday night and revealed that by refinancing the remaining debt service from the 2003 referendum, taxpayers will see significant savings in the years to come. "The positive savings that will accrue over time due to the refinancing is pretty substantial," Superintendent Patrick Fletcher said. "Our debt service has gone down $50,000 for the 2013-14 school year and by 2014-15 it will be down $100,000." The budget, which calls for a $28,920,714 tax levy, includes paying off $1.5 million in debt service while allowing for the addition of two new…

Teresa, The 2% cap relates to the overall tax levy which can only be increased by 2% each year. The cap has no real affect on how much an Oradell or River Edge homeowner will pay as their portion to the levy. And the $276 may change later this month once the new reassessment is finalized   more ›
