Ongoing funding fight with DEP could result in continued deterioration of Steuben House at New Bridge Landing
Few towns in Northern New Jersey can boast of the historical significance of a Revolutionary War battleground in their backyard, but if things continue as they have, River Edge may be facing the loss of the Von Steuben House. "I'm very aware of the importance that New Bridge Landing could be to River Edge," Mary Donohue, Vice Chairwoman and River Edge representative of the Historic New Bridge Landing Park Commission said. "I say could be because at the present time it is in a terrible state of neglect, an almost willful deterioration that is taking place there; not on the part of the Commission or Bergen County Historical Society, but on the state of New Jersey." New Bridge Landing is a historic site in portions of New Milford, River Edge…

During a Revolutionary War weekend, members of the British 4th Battalion took over New Bridge Landing
British infantry claimed New Bridge Landing as their own this past weekend as the Bergen County Historical Society presented "Bergen County: The War of Outposts, March 23, 1780." Throughout the weekend members of His Majesty’s 22nd Regiment of Foot and Loyalist 4th Battalion, NJ Volunteers, performed the day-to-day duties of soldiers, such as sewing, leatherwork, musket maintenance and military drills. While the soldiers were showing off their skills, River Edge resident and New Jersey historian Kevin Wright presented a Power Point program on Saturday about "Historic New Bridge: The Bridge That Saved a Nation." On Sunday, a lecture was held on the British daybreak attack against the Continental outpost at Paramus Church in Ridgewood on …

Had it not snowed the night of February 8, 1780, British troops would have captured Washington and altered the outcome of the Revolutionary War.

Ackerman, Steuben, Zabriskie, Haring – these are some of the everyday street names we come across in and around Bergen County. But how many of us know where those names come from? Who they belonged to and why someone felt the need to memorialize them? Luckily, some very passionate Bergen County residents know the answers and are helping to keep the area’s rich history alive. Last night, several local historians gathered for a public roundtable discussion of some of their recent discoveries from the Revolutionary War. Bergen County wasn’t in the hot seat during the war – it was the hot seat. There was military conflict after military conflict in this area, and perhaps the most unfortunate part about it is that many of us know little or …

Unless you've gone out of your way to read about the Revolutionary War, or happened to attend last night's presentation about it at the Oradell Public Library, you would have no idea the role that women played in the war. On the American side, approximately 1 out of every 15 people on the battlefield was a woman. On the British side it was about 1 in 10, presumably because of their greater tolerance of wartime prostitution. "The multitude of women in particular, especially those who are pregnant, or have children, are a clog on our every movement," said George Washington in 1777. Barbara Marchant, editor of the 2009 book Revolutionary Bergen County, was the first of eight guest speakers, all of whom contributed to the book. Marchant …
