A portion of the borough's Open Space Trust Fund will be used to replace several white pines that have caused sap damage to the tennis courts
A handful of white pines by the borough tennis courts are now facing the axe as River Edge considers utilizing part of its 2013 Open Space Trust Fund to replace the offending trees. The white pines, which have been identified as causing damage to the courts by dripping sap, could cost up to $11,000 to remove and replace with a set of holly bushes in their place. "We made a big investment in the tennis courts and recreation is estimated it would cost $2,000 to clean the courts every year," Councilwoman Kathleen Murphy said. "I think that should go back into the allocations." The tree removal was previously removed from the proposed 2013 Open Space allocations to allow for the installation of a lightning detection system and setting aside …

The estimated $143,000 will also be used towards extending the River Edge Little League fence and setting aside for the future KBG field light replacement project
Utilizing the estimated $143,000 Open Space Trust Fund monies for 2013, River Edge will look to use a portion of that amount to install a Strike Guard Lightning Warning system at Kenneth B. George fields, the Little League field and Veteran's Memorial Park in the coming year. The remaining funding would be allocated to park and field maintenance, various committees and set aside almost $40,000 to be used towards the eventual replacement lighting project at KBG. "The main cuts are the [Veteran's] statue renovations and curb cuts [at Cherry Blossom]," Councilman Alphonse Bartelloni said. "This prioritizes what we already have since there is only a limited amount of money." The $28,468 lightning detection system is the same exact version …

Voters approved the restoration of the Open Space Trust Fund this past November and now the Council will determine how $143,765 will be allocated.
With the restoration of the River Edge Open Space Trust Fund for the next five years, the borough will now need to trim over $465,500 in funding requests for 2013. The majority of funding requests, totalling $410,468 were on behalf of the Recreation Commission. The borough is estimated to have approximately $143,756 available funding come Feb. 10. Voters defeated the Open Space Trust Fund ballot question in 2011 after much of the funding had been used to cover the salary and wages of three DPW workers who oversee the maintenace of the parks. Resident had a change of heart and restored the funding this past November after the total 2012 allocations of $22,000 were split between several groups. "Everything you see here is what we've done …

A look back at what took place in RiverDell
Several River Edge realtors came out in force along with homeowners on Monday night to speak out against the 2012 reassessment resultsin River Edge to the Mayor and Council as well as Tax Assessor James Anzevino. While no one in the audience was happy, the realtors stressed their concerns that going forward few homes in the borough will actually be sold. After months of speculation and contention surrounding the possible transfer of the $500,000 allocated to the Waterworks project to Saddle River, Freeholder Vice-Chairman John A. Felice recommended that the funds remain dedicated to the Waterworks project on Tuesday. His decision was approved by the entire Freeholder Board the following day. Proposal calls for Open Space Funding to cover Recreation employee and park maintenance
Under a new proposal by River Edge Councilman Alphonse Bartelloni, the bulk of the 2012 Open Space Trust Fund would be set aside for park maintenance attendant Carl Etter's salary and to cover the overtime costs by the Department of Public Works for park maintenance. "Rather than allocate $5,000 to Mr. Etter, I would suggest we allocate his full salary of $7,031 and $8,000 for the overtime maintenance of parks," Bartelloni said. "This would remove the two items from our overall budget." A previous recommendation by Borough Administrator Alan Negreann called for $5,000 to be set aside for Etter's salary and $9,000 for park maintenance. The borough has $23,000 total in the 2012 Open Space Trust Fund. Recreation Director Bobbi Conway had …

I would be nice to leave the trees and trim them appropriately as to not ove hang onto the tennis courts. The entire look of the courts and the area will be marred and changed should the trees be cut down. These trees should be worked with, not destroyed.   more ›
