Saint Matthew's Church to Serve as Site for Sunday's Gun Buyback Event

Bergen County officials will offer up to $300 for firearms during the buyback event

Residents wishing to sell their personal firearms will be able to do so on Sunday afternoon at Saint Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church as part of the Bergen County Sheriff's gun buyback program. Officers will be at the church from 1 to 5pm. Funded through the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office by seized assets from criminal cases, the program will pay up to $300 for firearms.  “Gun violence knows no bounds,” Sheriff Michael Saudino said in a statement. “Intentional violence and accidental discharges involving firearms can destroy families and communities. If we can take just one dangerous weapon out of our homes or off our streets, we can make Bergen County a safer place for all residents.” Firearms experts from the sheriff's office …

Haitian Artist Presents Latest Work at St. Joseph Church

The art show will run through July 17 in the Parish Life Center

Saint Joseph Church presents "Brightness and Serenity", the art of Paul Saint-Aimé with an artist's reception tonight, 6-9pm at 268 Grove Street in Oradell. Saint-Aimé, 79, will show his landscapes, portraits and caricatures in oil and acrylic paint at the Church from now through July 17. Born in Haiti, he has experienced moments of incredible change and upheaval in his native country, including a political coup d'état and the devastating earthquake of 2010 in which his home was destroyed.   Throughout it all, his art has been his comfort and strength. United Water Planner Claims Project Still Inherently Beneficial to New Milford

Further states that by the governing bodies lack of action, the application meets all criteria for approval

After years of the borough providing documentation showing that the United Water property would be best utilized for affordable housing units, the project planner for the proposed development of the 13-acre United Water property has stated that by New Milford's inaction, the mixed-use project is inherently beneficial to the town. Peter Steck concluded his testimony during Tuesday evening's Zoning Board of Adjustment meeting where he placed the onus of the Mayor and Council's decision to not rezone the property the impetus for the need of a D variance. Non-Profit Celebrates Three Years of Supporting Haitian Children

Wings of Refuge held its spring benefit at the Rockleigh Country Club on Tuesday night

Approximately three years since its creation, Wings of Refuge (WOR) held a spring benefit dinner on April 9 to showcase how far the organization has come in such a short time. The non-profit group was co-founded by New Milford native Alexa DeMiglio in May 2011 to help construct a children's home in Petionville, Haiti. The evening featured Haitian Paster Roger Wilson Charles who runs the Wings of Refuge Children's Home since its creation in May 2011. The home serves 20 children currently and the organization has plans for the construction of a new 50-bed facility. The celebration was capped off with the release of WOR's new website and it's first professional video created by New Milford High School 2002 graduate Jay Eagleson.

Letter to the Editor: SOD Invites Residents to Open Meeting

SOD will host a public meeting on April 10 for all New Milford and River Dell residents

On Wednesday, April 10, SOD will be holding an open meeting and invites all interested New Milford and Oradell residents to attend. The meeting is scheduled for 7:00 pm at the Senior Center on River Road.   At that time we will be recapping the Board of Adjustment Hearings on granting variances to develop the United Water property.  The Executive Board will discuss strategies for the final portion of the hearings.  The public can now present its case to the Board and then the hearing will be open for comments from the public.  Those residents who have been following the developments but have been unable to attend the Board meetings are welcome to come and participate on the 10th.  With the end in sight it is imperative that we present a …

Hekemian Hearing Nears a Close With Final Witnesses Testifying

The proposed United Water property hearings before the New Milford Zoning Board of Adjustment is closing in on its final meetings

After over 30 regular and special meetings before the Zoning Board of Adjustment, the hearings for the proposed development of the 13-acre United Water property is nearing a close. Development attorney Andy DelVecchio called two of his three final experts last week and is expected to conclude his presentation on April 9. The proposed mixed-use development includes a 70,500 sq. ft. supermarket, a 4300 sq. ft. bank and a significantly pared down housing component--24 units down from an original 221 units. "I'm getting close to concluding direct presentation for the application," DelVecchio said. Wings of Refuge Soars from Infancy to Adulthood

The non-profit organization, co-founded by NMHS graduate Alexa DeMiglio will host a benefit on April 9 to showcase their growth over the past three years

Approximately three years since its creation,Wings of Refuge (WOR) will host a spring benefit dinner on April 9 to showcase how far the organization has come in such a short time. The non-profit group was co-founded by New Milford native Alexa DeMiglio in May 2011 to help construct a children's home in Petionville, Haiti. DeMiglio, who attends Powerhouse Christian Church in Wyckoff first ventured to Haiti in January 2011 and has returned 10 times since then. While there she met Pastor Roger Wilson Charles, a Haitian minister who has planted six Christian churches in the country that’s primary religion is voodoo. Wilson shared his ideas for the children's home with her on an empty property and since then Wings of Refuge was founded and has …

The Saint Joseph School PTO held its annual Saint Patrick/Saint Joseph Daybake sale. With Saint Patrick's Day on March 17th and Saint Joseph's Day just two days later (on the 19th), the festivities have grown to honor both saints.

Proposed Madison Gardens Set to be Rentals

An application to construct a 14-Unit multiple dwelling on Madison Avenue in New Milford is set to be rental based

The New Milford Zoning Board began the hearing on the application for property located at 391 Madison Avenue, Tuesday. The plans call for the construction of a three-story, 14-unit multiple dwelling with parking under the building. Because the land is currently zoned for residential use, the applicant is requesting variances from the Zoning Board of Adjustment. The applicant, Alex and Sons Real Estate Investments, is seeking a use-variance to construct Madison Gardens--14 one and two bedroom multiple dwellings on property zoned for one-family single unit dwelling.
