Wi-Fi Coming to River Edge and Oradell Terminals

New Jersey Transit's board voted to enter into an agreement with Cablevision to provide Wi-Fi at its stations and on its trains, according to an agency release.

Rail riders will soon be able to surf the web on their tablet or laptop at the River Edge and Oradell Terminals and other major mass transit hubs. New Jersey Transit's board voted Wednesday to enter into a 20-year contract with Cablevision to offer Wi-Fi at its stations and on trains via a dedicated, trackside Wi-Fi network, the public transit agency announced in a statement Wednesday. “This public-private partnership will enable NJ Transit to deliver on one of the top requests from our customers — wireless internet access at stations and onboard trains,” NJT executive director James Weinstein said in a statement.  “We are thrilled to work with Cablevision to further enhance the overall customer experience on our system by offering a …

"Different World" Could Cost River Edge Transit Village Project

The borough and NJ Transit will have to meet in 2013 to discuss what to do with plans for a Transit Village near New Bridge

For years the redevelopment of the southern portion of River Edge has hinged on two projects - Huffman Koos and a Transit Village. And while progress is slowly moving forward with the proposed trio of retail buildings by Total Wine, the Villege has suffered yet another setback following a lack of responses that meet NJ Transit's strict criteria. Borough redevelopment attorney Francis Regan recently sat down with NJ Transit and appeared before the governing body this week stating that Transit is interested in meeting in the future. He was joined by borough planner Paul Phillips. "Unfortunately Transit makes it very difficult to create an economically viable project proposal," Regan said. "They include certain requirements such as a 650 …

NJ Transit May Eliminate Free Travel for Some Employees

The board of trustees will consider whether or not to remove policy for non-union members.

NJ Transit on Monday proposed eliminating a policy that allows unlimited free travel on rail, light rail, and bus lines for the agency's non-union employees, according to NJT Spokeswoman Nancy Snyder. The policy, which has been in effect for 30 years, will be considered by the NJT Board of Directors at their meeting Monday, Oct. 15. If approved by the board, it will be subject to Gov. Chris Christie's veto period, Snyder said. The change would go into effect on Jan. 1, 2013, resulting in non-union employees and non-union retirees no longer being able to use the transit system free-of-charge for personal purposes, according to a press release from NJT. “Moving forward, NJ Transit must continue to sufficiently consider the interests of our …

Sen. Menendez Touts Federal Transit Bill in Ridgewood

New Jersey to gain $63M in federal transit funding should a Senate bill pass, the senator said at the Ridgewood Train Station Monday morning

Standing in front of the newly-renovated Ridgewood Train Station, Sen. Robert Menendez on Monday touted the impact a new federal bill would have for New Jersey commuters in clearing congestion and cutting red tape to initiate transit development while preserving and creating jobs. Surrounded by local elected officials and armed transit police, the Democratic senator said New Jersey could reap rewards should the Federal Transportation Act of 2012 be passed by the legislature. "We are here today to announce that New Jersey stands to get $519 million in federal transit funding from the Federal Transportation Act that came out of the Banking Committee without any increase in federal spending," Menendez said. Sure is, I am sure he won't be talking about how NJ sends more money to Washington then we get back. And then he tries to tell us we are "reaping the rewards" of a portion of our own money coming back. What a crook!   more ›
