NJ Transit will resume service on four more rail lines Sunday morning, including the Main/Port Jervis and North Jersey Coast lines, the governor's office announced Saturday night. Also starting service will be the Raritan Valley and Atlantic City lines. With the Hoboken terminal having sustained significant flood damage in Monday's storm, the Main/Port Jervis line trains will start and end in Secaucus. The Main Line will run from Suffern to Secaucus making all local stops, while the Port Jervis line will run from Port Jervis to Secaucus making all local stops via Main Line. More than 80 bus lines will resume service on Thursday in New Jersey.
NJ TRANSIT has announced that the majority of its bus lines will begin running on Thursday.. The bus lines are part of a slow but steady restart of NJ TRANSIT's service following Hurricane Sandy, announced the same day as the 3 p.m. restoration of service on the River Line light rail between the Walter Rand Transportation Center in Camden and Trenton Transit Center. “This is tremendous progress,” said Transportation Commissioner and NJ TRANSIT Board Chairman James Simpson in a press release. “We are not out of the woods by any stretch, but we will continue working around the clock to further restore service where we can safely do so. New policy goes into effect January 2013.
New Jersey Transit's non-union employees will no longer be granted free travel on the agency's rail, light rail and bus lines as of January 2013. According to NJT Spokeswoman Nancy Snyder, the board of directors voted Monday to approve the elimination of the 30-year-old policy, as had been anticipated. The policy allowed non-union employees and non-union retirees to use the transit system free-of-charge for personal purposes. Under the new policy, free travel for non-union employees will only be granted for work purposes. Snyder said the change is part of an ongoing effort to implement cost cutting measures that make the agency more accountable, transparent and efficient. NJ Transit on Monday proposed eliminating a policy that allows unlimited free travel on rail, light rail, and bus lines for the agency's non-union employees, according to NJT Spokeswoman Nancy Snyder. The policy, which has been in effect for 30 years, will be considered by the NJT Board of Directors at their meeting Monday, Oct. 15. If approved by the board, it will be subject to Gov. Chris Christie's veto period, Snyder said. NJ TRANSIT will offer “early getaway” rail and bus service on Friday, August 31, for the benefit of customers leaving work early for the Labor Day holiday weekend. On Friday, August 31, extra outbound trains will operate on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast, Raritan Valley, Morris & Essex, Pascack Valley and Port Jervis lines starting at approximately 1pm. Extra buses will operate from the Port Authority Bus Terminal on more than two dozen bus routes starting around noon. On Labor Day, Monday, September 3, trains will operate on a weekend/major holiday schedule on all lines. State, Port Authority warn of "significant" eastbound delays because of Cross Bronx bridge repairs, urge drivers to use mass transit, and to expect bus delays into the city through Labor Day.
This summer could be remembered as a traffic hell by the millions of people who travel east over the George Washington Bridge thanks to the closure of a lane on the oft-congested Cross Bronx Expressway from this Friday through Labor Day. The lane closure will take place on the Alexander Hamilton Bridge, which spans the Harlem River and connects Manhattan to the Bronx. The bridge is already a chokepoint, as traffic from both levels of the GWB merge onto one roadway. Several other significant roadways feed into and out of the span, including the Harlem River Drive and Major Deegan Expressway. NJ TRANSIT today announced a special extension of the Family Super Saver Fare, which allows up to two children 11 and younger to travel free with each fare-paying adult. Usually limited to weekends and holidays, the Family Super Saver Fare will be in effect continuously from 7 p.m. Friday, June 29 until 6 a.m. Monday, July 9, on all trains (except for travel to/from Metro-North stations), buses and light rail lines in honor of Independence Day. In addition, NJ TRANSIT will offer extra service in advance of Independence Day and on the holiday itself to give customers more travel options, whether leaving work early to get a head start on festivities or attending fireworks displays on the Fourth of July.
