Local food pantries struggling to keep up with the demand this holiday season.
For food pantries across Northern New Jersey, Hurricane Sandy dealt a double blow: It increased the number of families in need of assistance and shortened the span between Halloween (which Gov. Chris Christie moved to Nov. 5) and Thankgsiving, which comes early this year. Prior to the storm, the Community Food Bank of New Jersey reported more than 960,000 residents of Northern New Jersey are food insecure, meaning at times they lack access to enough food to maintain an active, healthy life. The Community Food Bank is hosting its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive this Saturday, Nov. 17 from 9am to 2pm at the following locations in Bergen County: The Center For Food Action is also collecting food to feed people in our community at the …

Annual turkey drive in River Edge returns next weekend
Next week, River Edge residents and volunteers will once again collect turkeys and non-perishable food donations in the St. Peter the Apostle parking lot on Fifth Avenue. Items can be dropped off on Nov. 17, 9am to 3pm. This event has become a tradition at St. Peter’s as River Edge residents Sheridan and Dottie Ogden began collecting turkeys 14 years ago to benefit the Community FoodBank of New Jersey. This is the second year that St. Peter's has taken over the annual event. "Your generosity has provided turkey dinners for thousands of our neighbors over the years and we are extremely grateful for your support," Pat Rice said. To date the annual collection drive has collected over 5,500 turkeys. Residents can bring frozen turkeys or non-…

Several thousand smaller cousins of the Great Pumpkin have arrived in River Edge
For the past few weeks the Great Pumpkin has yet to rear his head in River Edge, although more than 2,000 of his smaller cousin pumpkins have appeared. The overwhelming number of pumpkins have transformed the lawn of the First Congregational Church in River Edge into what has become somewhat of a local fall landmark in ther neighborhood. This year’s 4th annual Pumpkin Patch fundraiser has returned. Dozens of volunteers turned out when a truck load of various varieties of pumpkins, gourds and corn arrived earlier this month and an additional shipment was delivered over the weekend. The "wall" was born this August and every child that enters the office is encourage to sign their name in the Band Against Bullying campaign. "We're exposed to thousands of children a year and after reading all these articles, we wanted to be able to do something," Engel said. "This creates a conduit for parents to talk to their kids about this; as they are helping their children sign their name, they are asking questions, if they have…
