Children's musical was chosen for this year's holiday show
Just in time for the holidays, the Bergen County Players (BCP) presents Sleeping Beauty, a charming musical tale written by Jim Eiler with music by Eiler and Jeanne Bargy of the Prince Street Players from Nov. 26 through Dec. 18. The enchanted story of Sleeping Beauty is brought to life by BCP’s dynamic cast in a playful, interactive musical the whole family will enjoy. The tale involves beautiful Princess Melisande, who is cursed by an evil spell cast upon her by the wicked fairy, Trollarina. Upon pricking her finger on the forbidden spinning wheel she is doomed, but with the help of her loving fairy godmothers, the princess is sent into a deep sleep and can only be awakened by the kiss of a prince. The audience is sure to be left with a…

The day after Thanksgiving—“Black Friday”—unofficially marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season. Area stores, shopping centers and malls often open well before dawn that day. People form lines outside of stores and shopping malls in places like Paramus and New York City in the middle of the night. While these stores are often the most popular to shop at, have the most amount of merchandise to pick from, and offer sales unseen at other times during the year, small businesses may also offer a lot for shoppers on that day and throughout the holiday shopping season. Do you plan on visiting any local, River Edge or Oradell businesses on Black Friday? How about during the rest of holiday shopping season? If so, which ones? Weigh in on…

Prepping for 85th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
The 85th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade will kick off from 77th Street and Central Park West in Manhattan next Thursday at 9 a.m. Macy's opened the doors of its Moonachie production house to give a first look at some of the floats people can expect to see in this year's parade. The 72,000 sq. foot Moonachie production house is new to the Macy’s crew, who moved into it about a month ago from a location in Hoboken, Macy’s Studio employee Bill Barton said. “Moving our studio to Bergen County has been great. The facility is bigger, and transport is easier, since buildings in the area aren’t as close together,” he said. The floats, which will be stored in a warehouse in Carlstadt for the next week, will move into Manhattan next …
Drop-off location says it got a great response from area donators last holiday season
For the sixteenth year in a row, residents across the state will collect coats to donate to residents in need during the upcoming holiday and winter seasons. This year, there is a “Jersey Cares” drop off location at the Liberty Hyundai Dealership on Route 17 North in Mahwah. Jersey Cares, a non-profit established in 1993, is an agency that works with volunteers across the state to help provide for “community-identified needs,” according to its website. In addition to individual projects, group sponsors a handful of annual events aimed at having a big impact on Garden State volunteers and benefactors. The organization has set the lofty goal of collecting 50,000 “gently used” coats to be redistributed to Jersey residents in need. “This is …

Thinking of Getting The Kids A Dog For The Holidays?
If you're considering getting the kids a dog this holiday season, do yourself (and the dog) an enormous favor: think long and hard before making this major commitment. A dog can be a joyful addition to a family, but it is not a present to be opened, played with and then forgotten. In the months following the holiday season, shelters across the country typically fill to capacity with discarded, barking Christmas gifts. A Dog is For Life, Not Just For Christmas! This the motto of the UK's National Canine Defense League, created in the hopes of discouraging people against giving dogs to their children as gifts. We all know the scenario: the kids spend months begging, bargaining and pleading for a dog. Finally the adults give in, utterly …

Easy to make and it travels well, bringing Garden State history to the table
When the hosts take up your offer to bring something for Thanksgiving, do it Garden State-style with homemade cranberry sauce. This dish is pretty and almost as easy as opening a can. It also tells a story of New Jersey history, which might be useful table talk at Thanksgiving dinner. Cranberries have grown in New Jersey for centuries. One of the earliest written references is a letter from emigrant Mahon Stacy. Writing to his brother in 1680, Stacy said, "We have from the time called May until Michaelmas a great store of very good wild fruits as strawberries, cranberries and hurtleberries. The cranberries, much like cherries for color and bigness, may be kept until fruit comes in again. An excellent sauce is made of them for venison, …
Give the gift of caring this this holiday season
As the holidays are approaching, whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza, or Festivus, may yours be filled with warmth and enjoyed with friends and family. I know many of us concern ourselves with gift giving, with hanging decorations, with sitting by the fire with a warm cup of hot cocoa after coming in from making snow angels in the fresh snow. We plan schedules for visiting relatives, bask in the nostalgic scents of sugar cookies or latkes, and maybe try a piece of fruitcake and realize that it really isn't that bad. Unfortunately, many people don't share these experiences. We remember to be charitable with the Salvation Army Santas, donate our time to volunteering to gift wrap at bookstores for Shelter Our Sisters, and …
