Veterans, Servicemen Gather At New Bridge Landing

Young and old come to celebrate a long-standing tradition

A beautiful fall afternoon was the perfect setting for an American tradition at Historic New Bridge Landing.  The event, which is called the massing of the colors, involves groups of veterans and current servicemen from all different branches coming together to march and display their flags in a proud ceremony honoring those who have fought and those who continue to do so.  "The massing of the colors is something that has been a tradition in America since the post civil war era, but as America moved on later into the 20th century it wasn't seen that much longer in Bergen County," said historian Jack Goudsward, who helped put the event together. The Dead Speak! History in Stone and Story

The Bergen County Historical Society presented their Harvest Homecoming Event at historic New Bridge Landing

History is what will remain after we are gone. The Bergen County Historical Society (BCHS) is acutely aware of this, and works hard to preserve as much of our history as they can. A large portion of this can be found alive and well at historic New Bridge Landing. On Saturday, Oct. 30, the BCHS held a Harvest Homecoming event. It began at the Steuben House with Regina Haring discussing the history of her own family, and her connections to the 1/10th of an acre Haring Burial Ground in Norwood. The Haring family is one of the oldest Dutch families to occupy Bergen country, tracing their lineage to well before the independence of the United States.
