BC Swimming Breaks Three Records Enroute to County Title

Crusaders, Hawks Head to County Tournament on the Court

In a race to the very end, Bergen Catholic surpassed Demarest by 12 points (212-200) for the Bergen County Meet of Champions team title and broke three county and one school records in the process. Bergen's 200 Medley Relay team of Josh Sembrano, John Om, Sebastian Lopez and Liam Kelly (1:37.94), 400 free relay of Sembrano, Rob Farrell, Om, and Liam Kelly (3:14.04) set new County records while Sembrano finished the 100 backstroke in 51.06, shattering a school and county record in the process. Sembrano also had an oustanding day in the pool claiming third in the 200 freestyle while Om nabbed the runner-up position in the 200 IM and 100 breast stroke. Shapiro, Schaefer Lead Hawks to Victory

River Dell improves to an 8-9-1 record and looks toward positioning themselves for the state tournament

With just three games remaining in the regular season, the River Dell Golden Hawks (8-9-1) skated away with a 3-2 victory over Monsignor Donovan (8-6-1) on Sunday to position themselves for a better seed in the state tournament. After a scoreless first period, the Griffins exploded with a two-point lead courtesy of Connor Grant. But Hawks captain Ben Shapiro answered with a pair of tallies of his own with the help of Thomas Melvin and Eric Banks. “We always had three guys back on defense and capitalized on our chances.” Captain Ben Shapiro said. “I’m glad I was able to make the impact I did to help out our team win. Hawks, Crusaders Run Away with League Titles

Both schools also had strong showings in the County Swim Meet

The River Dell girls and boys and Bergen Catholic indoor track teams all claimed Big North division titles this week as the Hawks and Crusaders swept past the competition. River Dell had the added bonus of being the only school to bring home both titles and take down rival Ramsey. The boys ran past the Rams 102-80 while the girls won 91-69 for the Patriot title. The Hawks watched as Zach Hubner (55M, 400M), Christian DeSanctis (55HH, Long Jump, Triple Jump), Tim Olson (1600M, 3200M), Conor Davidson (55M), Ryan Oellermann (55HH), Austin Berringer (Shot Put), Brandon Jurasin (High Jump), Mike Boucher (Long Jump), Calvin Hartman and Mike Kost (Pole Vault) and the 4x400 relay (Alejanrdo Capote, DeSanctis, Oellermann, Hubner) claim top …

Crusaders Dominate at Winter Track Meets

The Bergen Catholic wrestlers won four matches in a row and the Lady Hawks basketball team is still on a roll

Bergen Catholic received an inspired performance from its sprint medley relay team of Kyle Ellerson, Eddie Dehais, Anthony Leithauser, and Matt Morano during a recent meet as the quad-team propelled themselves to a dominant first place finish in 3:52.2. The Crusaders' young track athletes got the chance to show their immense talents at the Big North Frosh/Novice track meet as the sophomore 4 x 400 team of Jelani Garvin, Eddie Dehais, Anthony Leithauser, and Bryan Castro placed 1st overall, while Garvin also placed 3rd overall in the 55 meter race. Hawks Fall Short to Dwight Morrow

The River Dell Golden Hawks now sport a 5-5 record after falling to the Maroon Raiders

ORADELL- The River Dell boys’ basketball struggled at home on Tuesday as the Golden Hawks fell 69-52 to the visiting Dwight-Morrow Maroon Raiders. The loss brought the Hawks record to an even 5-5. Troy Bendian got the Hawks off to an early start with a fastbreak run down court but the Raiders continued to fight back and take an early halftime lead. Prior to the half, senior Nicky Shanman banked back-to-back treys. “I always think positive before going into each game” Shanman said. “I think when our team executes we can be very successful.” Both sides exploded in the final quarter netting a staggering 40 points each. Senior CJ Doornheim kept the Hawks in the game to close the gap with his game high 18 points. River Dell Defeats Dumont For Second Dual Meet

The River Dell Golden Hawks take the victory from the Dumont Huskies to improve their season.

ORADELL-The River Dell Golden Hawks dominated on the mat this past Friday night, defeating the Dumont Huskies 63-12. The Hawks previously took on Mahwah with a 51-18 win for their first dual meet of the season. The victory over the Huskies, handed River Dell its second dual meet win. With a tremendous start to the season, Senior Nick Siegel, wrestling in the 152 weight class admits “We have a very talented group of wrestlers this season. Even with the start to a great season, we still have a tough schedule that’s going to get us ready for the post season.” River Dell’s DJ Tirelli (120), Chris Kallensee (126), Danny Lynch (132), Vincent Cariddi (138), Brenden Campbell (145), Nick Siegel (152), and Tyler Kallensee (170) all had successful …

Crusaders Claim County, Four Individual Titles

Lady Hawks Head Coach Lou Wejnert picked up 400th career win this week as well

Bergen Catholic capped off an incredible team performance just before New Years as the Crusaders claimed their 16th Bergen County Wrestling Championship in program history along with four individual championships. Nick Suriano (106 lbs), Tyler Casamenti (113 lbs), Laurien Anghelina (138 lbs) and Johnny Sebastian (182 lbs) each claimed their individual championships by decisions of 2-1, 3-2, 10-3 respectively and a 3:57 pin. BC sent seven wrestlers into the championship round with JP Ascolese, Christian Jenco and Carmine Goldsack coming in short; Troy Schaafsma and Kevin Mulligan finished third; Dan DiLorenzo was fifth and Matt Rose seventh. Basketball Wins Big in Holiday Tournaments

Once again, the Bergen Catholic matmen won big in Delaware's Beast of the East

From Union City to Englewood and even Arizona, basketball squads at River Dell and Bergen Catholic are looking to make names for themselves early in the season at their respective holiday tournaments. The Lady Hawks have won three in a row this week trouncing Westwood, 55-36; Pascack Hills, 51-38 and Paramus, 40-29 with the victory over the Spartans coming in at the Soaring Eagle Holiday Tournament in Union City. And while the squad was struck with an early season injury to freshman forward Christine Woods (ankle), the Lady Hawks have stayed competitive in each game to date. The Golden Hawks suffered their first loss of the season, 66-39 to Westwood as several low scoring periods doomed the boys team. River Dell then faltered against …

Winter Sports Arrive with Huge Wins for Hawks, Crusaders

Wrestling returned to Oradell with 14 individual titles split between the two high schools

With all winter athletics in full swing, the River Dell and Bergen Catholic matmen brought home several titles following their opening tournaments, hockey is struggling and basketball will face uphill battles. The Crusaders traveled to Pittsburgh, Pa., for the Central Catholic Invitational to open their season and returned with seven titles after sending 10 matmen to the finals. Carmine Goldsack (285) and Kevin Mulligan (170) led the way and were followed by Nick Suriano (106), Troy Schaafsma (126), Gianni Hallha (160), Johnny Sebastian (182) and Christian Jenco (195).  Bergen returned for a pair of dual meets on the road this week, a 40-26 loss at South Plainfield and a 56-12 victory over Paramus Catholic. Lady Hawks Host Benefit Tournament, Falter Against Summit

The Lady Hawks took to to their home court against the Hilltoppers and came up short 30-28 to bring their early season record to 1-1

The River Dell Lady Hawks competed against the Summit Hilltoppers on Sunday night for the Autism Speaks Benefit. The Autism Speaks Benefit ‘provides personalized attention to all major gift donors.’ The Lady Hawks, who opened their season with a 38-28 victory over rival Ramsey, faltered in the final minutes, 30-28 and bring their season record to 1-1. “We’re still a new team so were not working together, but once we get a few games under our belt we’ll be much better,” senior captain Kayla McGovern stated. The Hilltoppers started the game off strong as Madeline Gramigna (six points) secured the first field goal of the night.
