Gov. Chris Christie visited Westwood Thursday for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley. Christie praised the hospital's officials for their work and State Health Commissioner Mary O'Dowd for ultimately approving the hospital last year. HUMC at Pascack Valley was the first hospital to receive a license from New Jersey in almost 30 years. "I'm thrilled that this is happening and we can be part of it together," Christie said. Christie and other officials also credited members of the community for their support in reopening the former Pascack Valley Hospital, which closed in 2007 at the same site. HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley is set to open at the former Pascack Valley Hospital June 1.
HackensackUMC at Pasack Valley CEO Chad Melton recently sat down with a crew from WCTV for an interview and took them on a tour of the soon-to-open hospital. The hospital's renovations are "99 percent complete," Melton said in the video on Washington Township's local cable channel. They are scheduled to open June 1. In the video, Melton shows WCTV's crew many of the hospital's new operating rooms, waiting rooms, "Bistro 250" cafe and other renovated areas. As the opening date approaches, hospital officials are planning to hold some celebratory events, including a community day for the public on May 18 and a visit from Governor Chris Christie May 23, Melton said in the video. HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley is holding an employment open house for anyone interested in applying for jobs there from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday. The hospital has hired about 50 employees so far and will fill about 300 positions by the time they open June 1, according to hospital rep Lauren Zaccardi Samman. There are openings in many departments, including pharmacy, case management, laboratory, radiology, materials management, respiratory therapy, emergency department, risk management, security, plant operations, finance, nursing managers, staff nurses, housekeeping and food services. Officials at HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley expect to take their first patient June 1, according to CEO Chad Melton. Melton told Patch Tuesday that renovations to the former Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood are about 90 percent complete and they hope to have a certificate of occupancy for the whole building within the next month and have a license by April. The renovations will make the hospital an all around more comfortable place for patients than the Pascack Valley Hospital was, Melton said. The old pea green walls have been repainted white or other bright colors. Furniture in work areas is designed to dampen sound so it will not bother patients. A three-judge panel decided that they would uphold the approval of Hackensack University Medical Center at Pascack Valley in Westwood.
