Waterworks Funding Goes to Freeholders in June

Small crowd at Open Space Public Hearing yielded few comments

The Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders will make their final decision on the allocation of $500,000 toward the Hackensack Waterworks chimney stabilization project at its June 20 meeting following Monday evenings public hearing. "I listened very hard to the residents of Oradell and members from historic preservation for the Waterworks property to restore full funding," Freeholder John Felice said. "On June 20 each Freeholder will have the opportunity to vote on the allocations." Felice had previously proposed removing the Waterworks funding and transferring it to Saddle River so as to reimburse the borough for the purchase of the Marker property near Rindlaub Park for a parking lot and street access to East Allendale Road. He changed…

Week In Review: Tax Assessments Concerns Continue, Funding for Waterworks

A look back at what took place in RiverDell

Several River Edge realtors came out in force along with homeowners on Monday night to speak out against the 2012 reassessment resultsin River Edge to the Mayor and Council as well as Tax Assessor James Anzevino. While no one in the audience was happy, the realtors stressed their concerns that going forward few homes in the borough will actually be sold. After months of speculation and contention surrounding the possible transfer of the $500,000 allocated to the Waterworks project to Saddle River, Freeholder Vice-Chairman John A. Felice recommended that the funds remain dedicated to the Waterworks project on Tuesday. His decision was approved by the entire Freeholder Board the following day. After just celebrating its 70th success story …

Waterworks Repair Funding Supported By Freeholders

The Bergen County Freeholders approved restoring the $500,000 towards the Hackensack Waterworks stabilization project; next up is an April 30 public hearing

After "seeing the light" as Hackensack Riverkeeper Captain Bill Sheehan put it, the Board of Freeholders unanimously supported Freeholder Vice Chairman John Felice in his Tuesday decision to restore the $500,000 Open Space Trust Funding to the historic Hackensack Waterworks in Oradell during their meeting Wednesday. “After much contemplation, consideration and comments from residents and historical advocates my final recommendation will be to concur with the original allocation of $500,000 to the Water Works project via resolution to the Board of Chosen Freeholders,” Felice said, reiterating his change of mind. Felice had previously proposed removing the Waterworks funding and transferring it to Saddle River so as to reimburse the borough …

Oradell, New Milford Urge Freeholders to Secure Waterworks Building

A final decision on the $500,000 Open Space funding from Bergen County will be decided by the Freeholders next week

With just one week until the Board of Freeholders vote on a controversial move to eliminate $500,000 in Bergen County Open Space funding from the Hackensack Waterworks buildings along the Oradell and New Milford border, the governing bodies in each municipality approved resolutions urging the County Board to rethink their decision. The Oradell-specific letter focuses on the need for the stabilization of the chimney smokestacks, repairing the fence around the property and closing the building to the public. Even though the Waterworks is not open to residents, access is still available to the interior of each building. "Until the County makes up its mind on what they will do with the buildings, something needs to be done," Oradell Council …

Waterworks Building Set to Lose $500,000 to Saddle River Parking Lot

The Bergen County Freeholders, who could make a final decision on March 21, have proposed reallocating funds from stabilizing the Oradell buildings to reimburse Saddle River for the creation of a parking lot

All with a single three-letter word, the Hackensack Waterworks buildings could officially lose $500,000 in Bergen County Open Space funding to a proposed parking lot in Saddle River. Over the summer the Bergen County Open Space Trust Fund Committee, comprised of residents, government officials, and environmentalists, recommended that $500,000 of the available $6.9 million be set aside for the stabilization of the Waterworks smokestacks. This fall, the Board of Freeholders chose to reallocate that funding to reimburse the borough of Saddle River for the purchase of the Marker property near Rindlaub Park for a parking lot and street access to East Allendale Road. "One thing that has taken place is that our advice, we've basically been told '…

Sadly, Larry, you have never understood that the County will NEVER allow this to be a "passive" park. It can't afford it, and it can't afford to pay the $25 million in demolition cost....and that could be a low estimate. Since you don't value history and you don't understand the incredible heritage for the children of Oradell and future children, perhaps you should find a focus that allows you to…   more ›
