Hackensack police have released a composite sketch of a man they say tried to lure an 11-year-old boy into a car last week. The man reportedly approached the child as he walked to school near Union and Sussex Streets and asked where a Costo store was located, NJ.com reported. When the boy said he didn’t know, the man continued talking to him before asking him to get in his Jeep Wrangler. As many as five luring attempts have been reported in the area last week. In Oradell, police were investigating a report of an older white male with gray, balding hair, wearing a button-down shirt and black pants who approached two children. A sketch released by police in a Maywood incident shows a man with facial hair and what is described as salt and …

According to plans announced Monday by County Executive Kathleen Donovan, the Bergen County Police Department, which is located on Zabriskie Street in Hackensack, will be relocated to the county’s former Health Department building in Paramus on East Ridgewood Avenue. Also on the move is the county’s Department of Public Works (DPW) building currently located behind County Police headquarters in Hackensack, which will move to the Mosquito Control Department building in Paramus. Former Bergen school administrator says enough is enough with standardized tests.
As hundreds of thousands of New Jersey schoolchildren sit down for state testing over the course of the next month, NJ Spotlight came upon at least three families who are sitting this one out. Particularly notable: They are teachers and administrators themselves, past and present. And each said that's part of the reason they've decided to opt out their kids, having seen how pervasive testing has become in schools where they’ve worked. “Educators have to be first with this,” said Maryann Reilly, a Ringwood mother, education consultant, former school administrator in Newark, Hackensack , and most recently assistant superintendent in Morristown. “If people on the inside aren’t doing this, how can we expect our neighbors to,” she said. In her …

Residents, community leaders call for justice after fatal shooting of unarmed black teenager.
More than 600 people donned hoodie sweatshirts and marched in Englewood Sunday to show solidarity with the family of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager who was shot dead by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida. The marchers traveled from Mount Calvary Baptist Church to MacKay Park in near silence to protest the killing. George Zimmerman, 28, told police he acted in self-defense when he gunned down the unarmed 17-year-old on Feb. 26. Zimmerman had called police to report Martin as looking suspicious. The killing and the fact that Zimmerman has not been charged sparked a national outcry, led the Sanford police chief to temporarily step down and prompted federal authorities to launch an investigation. Florida police …

Ronald J. O’Malley used official office to help his Ridgewood-based firm.
Former Bergen County Improvement Authority chairman Ronald J. O’Malley was sentenced to two years in prison Tuesday for a mortgage fraud scheme that falsely claimed mortgage borrowers worked at the county’s public financing agency, U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said. O’Malley, 48, a principal in Ridgewood-based mortgage brokerage firm Diversified Financial Group, was also hit with a $25,000 fine imposed by U.S. District Judge Dennis M. Cavanaugh. O’Malley and his coconspirators arranged for phony paystubs and W-2 forms to show borrowers worked at the BCIA, federal prosecutors said. O’Malley and others also arranged for agency staff to confirm the bogus information to banks and lenders calling to confirm the information. Former Diversified …
