River Edge is still weighing its options between selling the former DPW yard or converting it into municipal parking
With no clear consensus among the governing body, River Edge will dedicate an entire April work session with the borough engineer and planner on what should be done with the former DPW yard on Grove Street. The lot, which is partially zoned commercial and partially residential, was the subject of a prior discussion to convert the lot into commuter parking but came with a pricetag of at least $100,000. "The borough has the opportunity to sell the property son long as it is not needed for public use," Borough attorney Thomas Sarlo said. A proposal to convert the former DPW yard on Grove Street into commuter parking could prove costly to River Edge as borough engineer Robert Costa presented four options to the Mayor and Council with plenty of bells and whistles. The options, ranged from laying down gravel to macadam to environmental pavers, along with lighting, drainage, and a stairway up to Kinderkamack Road. "I cam up with a list of budgetary items that you can decide what you do or don't want," Costa said. "I've included taking down the current retaining wall and replacing it with a new one, adding a stairway access up to Kinderkamack Road and options with ingresses and egresses on both Grove Street and Lincoln Avenue or just one." Empty for 25 years, the former Department of Public Works lot at the end of Grove Street in River Edge is still awaiting a final appraisal before the borough could move forward with selling the third of an acre property. Borough engineer Robert Costa will appear for the governing body next week to review what options the borough has regarding potential development. Sitting fallow for 25 years, the former River Edge Department of Public Works may see new life as the third of an acre property betweenKinderkamack Road and Grove Street could be rezoned and sold for potential commercial development. During Monday's Mayor and Council meeting, borough attorney Sam Cereste proposed merging the property under the commercial zone rather than it being currently split between commercial and residential. "You could then offer it to one of the neighboring commercial owners first for development," Cereste said. Officials hinted that an interested party would like to purchase or lease the borough owned lot
The former River Edge Department of Public Works yard continue to sit vacant between Lincoln Avenue and Grove Street years after the department moved to its new building on Riverside Way. While DPW Superintendent John Lynch had proposed creating a satellite location for his office during times of emergency following the lasting effects of Hurricane Irene, he later reversed that direction, stating that his concerns of vandalism and the upset residents outweighed any benefit.
