Rehabilitation of Elm Street Bridge Nears Completion

The $1 million expansion and renovation project, which began in July is expected to be finalized by March

Following months of delay due to weather and a nesting heron, the $1 million expansion and renovation Elm Street Bridge project is now expected to be completed by March 2013. Work on the 1892 pony-truss style bridge was initially expected to begin in April 2012 but was pushed back two months to allow the heron's clutch to hatch. The County-owned bridge, which splits Elm Street between Oradell and New Milford, is expected to be widened by two-feet and increasing the weigh limit from three-tons to 40-tons so it meets federal standards. "The latest timeline from the County is to have the bridge be completed by the end of March," Oradell Borough Engineer Marisa Tiberi said. "The steel is supposed to be delivered this week and weather …

Bird Flies Coop, Elm Street Bridge Rehab Begins

The Elm Street Bridge, which connects Oradell and New Milford will finally undergo construction starting this month to be brought up to federal safety standards

Now that the nesting season is over for the Elm Street Bridge heron, rehabilitation work can officially begin following the two month delay. The heron, which created a nest near the bridge, has delayed construction since April 5. The $1 million County-funded project includes widening the bridge by two-feet and increasing the weigh limit from three-tons to 40-tons so it meets federal standards. Oradell had previously approved weight and speed restrictions for the bridge to keep commercial vehicles and Transit buses from using it as a shortcut from Elm Street to New Milford Avenue. The Elm Street Bridge has been closed to vehicular traffic since June 2008. Owned by Bergen County, the bridge splits Elm Street, a borough owned road that leads …

The NJ Transit buses won't be allowed on the bridge David. While the Elm Street Bridge will be rebuilt to allow up to 40 tons of weight, Oradell passed a resolution limiting the vehicle weight limit to about 3 tons, for an average car or SUV. NJ Transit also signed off on an agreement to keep their buses off the bridge.   more ›

Bird Delays Construction On $1 Million Bridge

Work has been delayed until June 30 with no set timeline in place to finish

A not often seen migratory bird, a Blue Heron has recently decided to make its nest not far from the Elm Street Bridge. Due to the possibility of negatively affecting the clutch, Bergen County has delayed the construction work on the bridge from April 9 to June 30. Found throughout most of North America, the Blue Heron prefers to stay close to water such as fresh and saltwater marshes, mangrove swamps, flooded meadows, lake edges, or shorelines, while nesting in nearby trees or bushes. The Elm Street Bridge has been closed to vehicular traffic since June 2008. Owned by Bergen County, the bridge splits Elm Street, a borough owned road that leads from Oradell into New Milford. It's 76-feet long and 20-feet wide but due to age and the …

and I thought the hold-up on the bridge was caused by the residents around St. Joe's who didn't want the street to be used as a short-cut speed-way. What was I thinking?   more ›

Elm Street Bridge Construction Begins April 9

No foot traffic permitted on bridge during construction.

Oradell Emergency Management has said that construction on the Elm Street Bridge will begin on Monday, April 9th. The 1892 pony-truss style bridge has been closed to vehicular traffic since June 2008. The estimated $1 million project would include widening the bridge by two-feet and increasing the weigh limit from three-tons to 40-tons so it meets federal standards. Owned by Bergen County, the bridge splits Elm Street, a borough owned road that leads from Oradell into New Milford. It's 76-feet long and 20-feet wide but due to age and the constant flooding in the area, there has been significant damage and deterioration to the stringer beams underneath the metal bridge decking.  For the past few years, the Oradell Mayor and Council have …
