The second annual River Dell Distinguished Graduate Dinner will honor seven alumni
Tonight The Friends of River Dell (FORD) and the River Dell School District will honor the seven alumni who were selected as Distinguished Graduates. The seven alumni have made outstanding contributions to society and made River Dell proud that they began their career preparation with the regional district. "I would say that that is a very impressive list of graduates," dinner organizer Cindy Sherlock said. "We are a very fortunate district to have such an accomplished group of individuals to have walked our halls. To think we have only scratched the surface. Joe DiPietro attended Rutgers University where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A in English. And he may be best known for writing the book & co-writing the lyrics to “MEMPHIS,” the Tony Award winner for Best New Musical in 2010. But did you know that in grade 7 at what was previously known as River Dell Junior High School, DiPietro wrote his first award winning play? Encouraged and sponsored by his English teacher, Ms. Sharon Milch, Joe submitted “Dream Stealer,” to Scholastic Magazine and won a Scholastic Writing Award for Drama. He graduated from RDHS in 1980. Master Gunnery Sergeant Peter Proietto has been a selfless patriot serving this nation since graduating River Dell in 1979. He joined the U.S. Marines after High School and served on active duty for one tour. After his initial enlistment, he was transferred to the USMC reserve where he was an active drilling reservist. When war broke out in the 1990’s, Sergeant Proietto returned to active duty to serve. After Dessert Storm he returned to the USMC reserve forces. After September 11, 2011, Gunnery Sergeant Proietto has made multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He was presented with the Bronze Star for Valor for his service in Afghanistan in 2003 after manning his vehicle's machine gun for an hour so that his fellow Marines could …

A son of River Edge, Paul Fishman graduated River Dell High School in 1974 and went on from there to become the US Attorney for the state of New Jersey when he was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009. Fishman graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University with a B.A. in 1978. He then attended Harvard Law School where he was Editor of the Harvard Law Review. After receiving his J.D. degree from Harvard, he served as a law clerk to Edward Roy Becker, a judge on the Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit from 1982 through 1983. In 1983, Fishman was admitted to the bar in the state of New Jersey and the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. A graduate of the River Dell Class of 1973, Dr. Jane Levine Powers has devoted her entire professional career to promoting the betterment of adolescents in society. Powers attended the University of Michigan and received a B.A in Social Science and then went on to Cornell University and received a Ph.D in Developmental Psychology. As part of her dedication, she has conducted many research project, publish a book, wrote many articles and has presented at national conferences.
