The merits of recycling on the town level are well publicized, but free-cycling is less famous. Free-cycling is a low tech, informal type of recycling. The free-cyclers benefit directly from the free-cycling, and so does the environment. Free-cycling keeps materials out of landfills and conserves resources. It is even more environmentally friendly than putting something in the recycling bin for a pick up, because it saves the gas that would have been burned to transport the product to a central recycling center and the resources it takes to sort, melt, and reuse recycled materials.
