The third attempt at bidding out the project was rejected following Hurricane Sandy cutting the timeline short.
Hurricane Sandy may have blown its way through River Dell about three weeks ago, but the effects are still impacting the day-to-day business in River Edge as the Council rejected the lone bid for a set of ADA doors to the police station. The bid, while received on Oct. 12, then sat in a safe until early Novemeber, as Borough Hall was without power for almost a full week. The bid was the third attempt in moving forward with installing ADA compliance doors to the River Edge Police Station and Borough Hall. The project will be funded by a Community Development Block Grant. "We had gone out for a third time to receive bids but they were due the day the hurricane hit," Borough Administrator Alan Negreann said. "Due to the lack of power Borough …

The borough will also again apply for Community Development Block Grants for the senior bus driver and dispatcher and senior activities
After the loss of one senior bus from poor maintenance, River Edge will now begin the process of seeking additional funding from Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) for a replacement. Additional grant applications will be submitted for the bus driver and dispatcher's salary and wages along with funding for Senior Citizens of River Edge (SCORE). “If you get a new bus, I would suggest getting Tom Smith [OEM Coordinator] in here to discuss how it could also be fitted for use during emergencies,” CDBG borough liaison James Arakelian said. “River Edge can access a county bus, but during large countywide emergencies, there is no guarantee you will get to use it. This would allow you to have a dual use.” The original 2001 Ford bus had to …

The River Edge Mayor and Council will make its final decision for the 2012 Community Development Block Grant applications in two weeks
At next Monday's River Edge Mayor and Council meeting, the governing body will officially decide what projects they will seek funding for from the 2012 Commuity Development Block Grant applications. The borough is allowed to apply for up to three projects but first has to narrow the list down from five possiblities: the senior bus driver salary and wages, senior bus dispatcher salary and wages, senior citizen activities, a replacement senior bus, or sidewalk and curb work on Oxford Terrace and Rutgers Place. According to Borough Administrator Alan Negreann, the council has to approve its 2012 application projects by Sept. 17 for an endorsing resolution as the final applications are due to the County on Oct. 5. As of August 28, the …

The borough is also in the midst of narrowing down the list of potential Community Development Block Grant applications. Community Development With an October 5 deadline looming to submit the 2012 Community Development Block Grant applications, River Edge will have to choose three out of five possiblities in hopes of receiving funding. After receiving a Community Development Block Grant to install ADA compliance doors to the River Edge Police Station and Borough Hall, a lack of bids now stalls the project
Twice the borough of River Edge has sought bids for new ADA compliant doors for the police station and borough hall and both times has received zero responses. Now the town will seek clarification from the Community Development Block Grant program, which has supplied the funding, on whether the governing body could negotiate with a contractor. "We had nine vendors pick up the packets but none actually bid on the project itself," borough administrator Alan Negreann said. The first time the borough went out to bid for the project, the specifications not only included the doors but the masonry component as well to replace the door frames. When there were zero responses, the second bid separated the two items but once again returned with no …

With less funding, the race for Community Development Block Grants will be even tighter in 2012
With cuts to the Community Development Block Grants for 2012, River Edge will face a tough decision ahead of just what exactly they will apply for. Luckily for the borough, there is time to make that decision with an October 5 deadline a few months away. "The issue we're running into is that funds are being cut ever year," borough liaison James Arakelian said. "When I started eight or nine years ago there was between $8 and $9 million being split between 12 towns. This year, the total is down to $1.2 million." He added that the exact funding won't be determined until have Congress meets in January or February to decide if they will reallocate funds to the Community Development Block Grants. In the past, the borough has submitted …

really? 10 years to destroy a bus? i think it takes way more then mother nature. Expected lifespan for a public transportation bus in NJ transit is 13 years. And we are talking about usage probably 20 times of what senior bus sees.   more ›
