Christie 'of Two Minds' on 'Gay Conversion' Therapy Ban

Governor undecided on whether he'll support Senate bill that would outlaw the practice among minors.

Gov. Chris Christie said Wednesday he is not sure if he would sign a bill banning minors from so-called "gay conversion" therapy should it reach his desk, nj.com reports. The New Jersey Senate's Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee voted 7-1 Monday to advance a bill to the full Senate that would outlaw the controversial practice, which seeks to alter a patient's sexual orientation. "I'm of two minds just on this stuff in general," he said in Stone Harbor, nj.com reports. "Number one, I think there should be lots of deference given to parents on raising their children. I don't — this is a general philosophy, not to his bill — generally philosophically, on bills that restrict parents ability to make decisions on how to care …

I've enjoyed the debate here. As it turned out, you were against this therapy all along. It didn't appear that way at first. So your issue all along was this-->>I am also wary that many on the Left and in the gay rights community want to go further, and actually ban certain religious teaching   more ›

Bergen Blue Laws Battle Headed to Court

Paramus seeks to enforce Blue Laws after Christie ordered them suspended.

It's been a week since Gov. Chris Christie issued the order to suspend Bergen County's Blue Laws so that residents most impacted by Hurricane Sandy could purchase necessary repair items. And while Paramus has the strictest Blue Laws on the books, County Executive Kathleen Donovan may take the borough to court this week to keep local officials from limiting what stores can be open. Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan had asked the state last Saturday to suspend the county’s Blue Laws as the County struggled with numerous power outages. Christie gave the order on Sunday, Nov. 4 to allow for retail stores to open. The Executive Order is meant to allow the sale of clothing and wearing apparel, building and lumber supply materials, …

Christie Lands In Bergen County In State Police Helicopter For Son's Baseball Game

Governor arrives by state police helicopter at St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale for baseball game.

Editor's Note: Story updated here with reaction and state police defense of the flight. Governor Christie landed in Bergen County in a state police helicopter late Tuesday afternoon to attend his son's baseball game against St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale. Christie arrived shortly before 4 p.m. to watch his son Andrew play baseball for Delbarton School. He was driven from the helicopter about 100 yards to the field in a black car with tinted windows. Responding to a question from Patch about the use of the helicopter to attend the game, Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak said, "It is a means of transportation that is occasionally used as the schedule demands. This has historically been the case in prior administrations as well…

State's Highest Court Issues Ruling on School Funding

Determines that state must increase funding for Abbott districts

The New Jersey Supreme Court ruled this morning that the state must increase funding to the 31 struggling cities formerly known as Abbott districts by an estimated $500 million. The state's former Abbott districts include Hoboken, Newark, Paterson, Garfield, Jersey City, Passaic, Camden and Trenton.  “The funding to the Abbott districts in FY 2012 must be calculated and provided in accordance with the School Funding Reform Act of 2008,” the court said in its decision written by Justice Jaynee LaVecchia. “Relief is limited to the plaintiff class of children from Abbott districts for whom the Court has a historical finding of constitutional violation.” The 3-2 ruling came after Gov. Chris Christie cut $1 billion in school aid for the 2009-10…

Christie: We'll Cut Spending, Fix Pension System, Boost Aid To Every School District

Governor lays out priorities in budget address.

Governor Chris Christie vowed on Tuesday afternoon to continue with what he called a “new normal” in New Jersey, calling for a reform effort that “marks the line in the sand that separates the way things used to be, and the way they are going to be.” Christie said his budget reduces government spending 2.6 percent from last year’s $30.2 billion budget and “marks a departure from the Trenton tradition of budgeting to meet deficit projections that embrace wish-list spending by legislators and assume continuous funding increases that irresponsibly ignore actual revenue sources.” Instead, his budget takes a “bottom to top” approach, and establishes priorities and will fund them based on revenue that is actually available, he said. The 2012 …

Ken, how hard is your employer looking for qualified US citizens? Are they posting jobs with laundry lists of 30 different skill sets that are completely unrelated to each other for the sole purpose of ruling out any one US employee? Companies routinely do this. For example, there isn't a person in the world who is a graphic designer, a network administrator, a COBOL programmer and a C#.Net …   more ›
