The Don Bosco Ironmen outscored the Bergen Catholic Crusaders 5-1 in the third quarter of the finals in the Bergen County Lacrosse Tournament. That scoring outburst made all the difference and propelled the Ironmen to a 10-6 victory and their second straight Bergen County championship. The Ironmen had a rough go of it in the first half. Bergen Catholic goalie Matt Pedrick was on point early on and held the Ironmen to just three first-half goals. “They came out playing hard. Both the Bergen Catholic golf team and track javelin squad set new records this past week. Crusaders golf set a new course record when they defeated Don Bosco 150-164 at Upper Montclair with three golfers shooting under par – Ryan Rose stroked a 28, eight points under par (36), while teammates Zach Egermayer and Steven Weingroff carded a 34 and 37 respectively. The Crusaders golf team also picked up wins over Passaic Tech (148-181) and Northern Highlands (149-165) while claiming their fourth straight team title in the Garden State Cup over The Peddie School. After playing together for three years at Bergen Catholic, brothers Kyle and Cameron Quiero of Verona will take the field again together in the fall of 2014. Kyle, who will graduate this June previously committed to Northwestern, will be joined by Cameron following his own June 2014 commencement as the younger Quiero verbally committed to the Wildcats this week, according to Inside Northwestern. The Bergen Catholic junior turned down offers from Pittsburgh and Vanderbilt along with previous visits to several schools in North Carolina. The outside line backer made 36 tackles during his junior season. Alecko Eskandarian, a former professional soccer player, has joined the NY Cosmos as an assistant coach.
After sweeping his way into the Bergen Catholic record books, New Jersey native Alecko Eskandarian has returned home to the Garden State after years of playing professional soccer on the West Coast. His career sidelined by injuries, the Mahwah resident will now take his experience as an athlete and help lead others as the newest assistant coach of the New York Cosmos. The return home also has an added special meaning as Eskandarian's father, Andranik played for the original Cosmos in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The elder Eskandarian's career allowed for the family to immigrate from Iran to New Jersey. "Soccer has been an instrumental part of my life since I was a baby," Eskandarian said. Spring has finally arrived and with it the opening of baseball, softball, lacrosse, track, boys tennis and volleyball seasons. And after a long winter, each of the River Dell and Bergen Catholic student-athletes ran to early season victories to open their respective schedules. River Dell boys lacrosse returns its top scorers with Steve Luca and Kevin Barry and standout goalie Ben Sagerman and have already raced to the top of the leaderboard with a 14-4 upset over Old Tappan and ecaped with a 5-4 victory over St. Joseph Regional. Teaneck rowing coach to lead prestigious event; Bergen Catholic to compete
The fourth annual Championship Regatta, directed by Teaneck's rowing coach, is planned at Overpeck Lake, the Bergen County Executive's Office announced Thursday. As many as 20 New Jersey high school teams will compete in the North Jersey Championship on the lake April 13, according to the county. College teams from top schools including Columbia University, Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania will also take to the water in the Childs Cup, intercollegiate rowing's oldest cup event. Tonight the Bergen Catholic community will welcome seven new members into the school Hall of Fame at The Fiesta in Wood-Ridge. The 16th Hall of Fame, which already includes 155 members, is sponsored by the Alumni Association. The new inductees include: Harry Carle, Class of 1985 (Athlete) – Harry enjoyed an outstanding four-year career on the Crusaders’ cross country and track teams. He was a First-Team All-County selection four times and was an All-State cross country honoree in 1984. The Record selected Harry to its All-Decade cross country team for the 1980s. The Bergen Catholic junior and freshman each returned home to Oradell with a state championship
After three days and four opponents, Bergen Catholic junior Johnny Sebastian and freshman Nick Suriano walked out of Atlantic City with a state title to their name after a one point victory over their opponents. Both athletes sprinted their way into the finals after handing their opponents major decision losses in the pre-quarterfinals, a split decision/techincal fall in the quarterfinals and major decisions in the semis. Their final victories, Suriano a 3-2 decision over Don Bosco's Kyle Bierdumpfel and Sebastian's 4-3 win against Hammonton's David Williams makes the duo the second pair of Crusaders to return as state champions in a single season.
