Helping Dogs Transition During Back to School Time

Getting the pets ready for a schedule shift.

The other night my son waltzed into the kitchen wanting to help with something. In his 4-year-old mind, he is all-knowing and rather resourceful. He magnetized to Dad’s task of slicing the freshly baked bread. We both shouted as his hand extended for the newly sharpened blade; and the next sound was one of fear crashing against her inspired determination.  We try not to yell in our house, unless in cases of utter urgency. I scooped him up, rocked him as he fussed and sat with him until his sharp wit was fully intact, at which point he told me that the thing that would really make her feel better would be 15 minutes on the iPad. Nice try, my clever one. Dog connection, you query? There always is one, and this week it points to the fact that…

Ramp Up for Back-to-School with Bedtime Math

With the new school year upon us, help get your kids’ brains working again with this fun, free daily email newsletter.

River Dell aree students return back to school on Sept. 5, which means it’s time for an abundance of expensive school supplies, backpacks full of complicated text books and dreaded questions about math homework. With back-to-school stresses piling up, Laura Overdeck wants to let children and parents in on a little secret: math can be fun. Really.  Overdeck is on a mission to change the way Americans think about math — especially given that math anxiety has been tracked in kids as young as age 5. This is what inspired her to create Bedtime Math, a nonprofit that sends out a daily email with a math problem tailored to “wee ones,” little and big kids.  Overdeck is a Westfield native who now lives in Short Hills, NJ. She is an astrophysics …

Back to School: Safety Tips, Reminders for Parents, Motorists

Kids across the country are heading back to school, and motorists need to be extra careful on the roads – especially in residential neighborhoods and school zones. Parents also should review with children basic safety rules for walking, riding a bike or t

As summer winds down, kids across the country are heading back to school. So Amica Insurance reminds everyone to be extra careful on the roads and offers some simple tips for parents and motorists to help keep children safe. “Many children will be going to school for the first time, so they may not be careful when crossing the street or running to catch the bus,” said Vince Burks, a senior assistant vice president with Amica Insurance. “Older children know the routine, but may forget basic safety rules in their excitement to catch up with old friends or start classes in a new school.” That’s why motorists need to be extra careful, especially while driving in residential areas and school zones, Burks said. “It’s important to slow down when …

School Lunch Standards to Take Effect This Year

Whole grain-rich foods, more fruits and vegetables mandated.

School districts across the country will bring new meaning to the "apple a day" saying this school year as nationally-mandated school lunch standards take effect. Beginning in September, the new lunch standards, introduced in January by First Lady Michelle Obama under the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act, will be implemented. The standards were created to help fight childhood obesity throughout the nation. According to a press release from the United States Department of Agriculture, the new meal standards are designed to "make the same kinds of practical changes that many parents are already encouraging at home." This involves the inclusion of fruits, vegetables, whole grain-rich foods, low-calorie foods and foods with reduced amounts of …

Mrs Obama is NOT the driving force behind all this dietary change as many of you have given her credit for... The ADA, more formerly known as the AND has been putting a great deal of pressure on dietary changes across the board. Quite honestly I am NOT an Obama fan; however, I do feel that change is grossly necessary in order to avert more of an obesity epidemic...   more ›

Hawks, Crusaders Face New Competition under Revised Football Classifications

NJSIAA incorporates the new Group V this season.

The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association released its classifications this week for the upcoming high school football season, following the executive committee's approval to create a Group V designation in the four public school sections in May. "This creates a greater opportunity for schools and for student-athletes," Jack DuBois, NJSIAA assistant director who is in charge of football, said following the approval. "It increases the number of teams playing in the playoffs from 128 to 160. At the same time, it eliminates 16 consolation games that schools didn't want to play anyway." The change moves the River Dell Golden Hawks out of North 1 Group 2 (enrollment based on 489-678 students) and into Group 3 (enrollment 747-949…

The district will also celebrate the Field House's Grand Opening this fall and welcome a new boys soccer coach

High School Similar to many other districts, River Dell will begin transitioning from the New Jersey core curriculum standards to the national common core standards. The national standards primary goal is to make sure that all students receive the best possible education rather than the previous state standards which differed from one state to another. So far, only the new content requirements for K–12 in English language arts and mathematics have been released, although new standards for science and social studies are in the works. Until the new science standards are …

Westfield shopping centers launches significant upgrades to their free mobile app just in time for the rush of back to school shopping. The app could be a helpful tool for shoppers at Garden State Plaza in Paramus.

Parents searching for back to school specials at the Westfield Garden State Mall can now download the latest version of their mobile app to help them find exactly what they are looking for faster.     Key new features include improved in-mall navigation, expanded product search, enhanced retail offers, social media integration, voice command and even the ability to purchase movie tickets and make dinner reservations.  “We had such an enthusiastic response to the original version of the Westfield App,” said Alan Cohen, executive vice president of Marketing, Westfield. “After studying the feedback of hundreds of thousands of our shoppers, we found that the majority wanted two things: to get around the mall easier and to save money. River Edge Board of Ed Appoints Longtime Candidate

Gyuchang Sim has been a five-year candidate for the RIver Edge Board of Education. He was appointed to fill Shawn Kucharski's open seat this week

Running as an uncontested candidate in the November Board of Education election, longtime candidate Gyuchang Sim was guaranteed a seat on the River Edge Board of Education. But after the resignation of Shawn Kucharski earlier this summer, the coveted position was available earlier than anticipated and after much deliberation by board members, Sim was appointed to the Board earlier this week. Sim has been a Board of Education candidate since he began his campaign in 2008 at the polls and since 2009 when he applied to fill an open position.  "I am a first generation immigrant," Sim said. "I attended Montclair State to become a teacher but due to family business I had to drop just before beginning student teaching." Instead, Sim went into …
