Do it in the shower. Do it while getting ready for bed. Just do it once a month. The American Cancer Society recommends women get into the habit of frequent breast self examinations. Being familiar with their breasts helps women notice any lumps, fluid or changes in size, shape or feel. “I encourage all of you to become an expert about the way your breasts look and feel so you can detect any subtle changes. After all, it’s our body, and we are the ones who have to live with whatever goes wrong with it,” said Jennie Yoon Buchanan, Medical Director of Women’s Imaging Services at Florida Hospitals. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and whether you love to shop, attend events, walk or run, there are tons of different ways to support the cause. Making Strides, part of the American Cancer Society is hosting the 2012 Making Strides Walk at Overpeck Park in Ridgefield Park on Oct. 21, 10am (Registration at 9am). So far, over $85,160.81 has been raised towards Making Strides through a combination of 100 teams from the Oradell's Allstate Office and Family Martial Arts to Paramus Gold's Gym. That same weekend, the River Dell based The Real Pink Flamingos will take to the streets of New York City for the 2012 Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. The borough turned out to support the American Cancer Society in its fight against cancer.
New Milford Relay for Life took place Friday night through the early morning hours on Saturday. Approximately 200 hundred residents supported the effort and raised more than $12,000 for the American Cancer Society. Participants can upload their photos from the event to this gallery.

Cancer survivors and families from New Milford, River Edge and Oradell join forces for the second annual Relay for Life
The second annual American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life" is only two weeks away and your help is needed to make this year's relay as successful as last year's event with over 800 participants and $97,000 raised to support the fight against cancer. Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight fundraiser to celebrate cancer survivorship, remember those who lost the battle and fight back against this terrible disease. Most importantly, Relay for Life raises money for research, education and local American Cancer Society programs. Participants form teams that camp out, walk laps around the track and participate in activities designed to build a spirit of community while honoring loved ones. Shannon Hogan was just one student honored during Monday's Board of Ed meeting at RDHS
For the past few months, students at River Dell have been busy bringing home awards for various accomplishments. On Monday night, the River Dell Board of Education honored those students during a Student Recognition. Under the tutelage of art teacher Mercedes Faunde, Shannon Hogan not only won $1,000 for herself but an additional $2,000 for the regional district by creating the winning T-shirt design for the Great American Smokeoff, an anti-smoking campaign, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, ENT and Allergy Associates, LLP (ENTA) and The Mount Sinai Medical Center.
