Police from all over Bergen County celebrated the second annual Blue Mass honoring law enforcement officers who gave their lives in the line of duty at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Ridgewood Wednesday morning. Fairview Chief of Police Frank Delvecchio established the mass last year as a way to honor those police officers who have given their lives in service to the residents of Bergen County. "The mass came about as a way to include God in remembering and honoring those police officers who have served and gave their lives in the line of duty, or have served and passed," Delvecchio said. A lone police officer's hat, a tri-folded American flag and a single red rose were placed on the altar representing the ultimate sacrifice of those…

Who’s NOT planning a BBQ this weekend? Here are new ideas for keeping your costs down. Sponsored by Home Depot.
Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbecue experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party. Here's their tips on how to save money on your Memorial Day feast. 1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead — say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of Barbeque America on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled rib eye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbecue grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade, perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce, but …
Outdoor dining would be permissible from April through November.
The governing body of River Edge is considering the approval of an outdoor dining ordinance allowing restaurants to set up tables outside during the warmer months so that patrons can enjoy the fresh air. Introduced by Councilwoman Kathleen Murphy, the ordinance would include a permit for outside dining, which council seemed to agree would be an annual renewable charge of approximately $200, The ordinance would also carry a stipulation that outdoor dining would be confined to run between April 15 through Nov. 30. The council suggested adding that all tables and chairs not tethered be moved inside after the restaurant has closed every night. Another stipulation is that no outdoor dining be permitted near a parking lot or driveway unless a …

Block party at the Oradell Library this fall as library collects pieces to start a Lego Club.
There is no doubt that parenthood comes equipped with moments of pain, but I think many moms and dads will agree that nothing comes close to the excruciating pain caused by inadvertently stepping on an orphaned Lego piece in the middle of the night. It takes great strength to suppress the cavalcade of curse words that instinctually rise to the surface. How many times have you thought of throwing those loose pieces away until your brain calculated the cost of each of those pimpled tiles, and there you were on your hands and knees picking them up. Again. Well, now you can rid your house of those loose little pillars of pain and give them to a good cause. The Oradell Library is going to be forming a Lego Club in the Fall and they are asking…

Former Congressman has filed paperwork to run against the Republican incumbent.
It sure seems like former Congressman Andy Maguire is looking to reclaim his old seat. The Democrat from Ridgewood is making the rounds and raising a warchest to take on well-funded, name-brand conservative incumbent, Scott Garrett. While Maguire – who was a congressman from 1974-1980 before Marge Roukema ousted him – claims the campaign is still "exploratory" at this point, his spokesman told northjersey.com that the 5th district seat is "certainly winnable." Maguire, 75, has been at party events in recent months, most recently introducing two Democratic Glen Rock council candidates. Politickernj.com reported he has filed the paperwork to take on Garrett in 2014. While the 5th district still favors Republicans, new voting lines now bring …
