River Edge Family, Others Spend MLK Day Helping Prepare for Emergencies

Volunteers interested in helping Bergen VOAD make a difference should visit the organization's website.

The Bergen County Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster led a group of county residents—including a River Edge family—in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service disaster preparedness and response service project.

On Jan. 20, Aditya, Aarushi and Deepti Dutta and other volunteers assembled thousands of emergency preparedness booklets in volunteer service to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. Bergen County residents were joined by hundreds
of thousands of volunteers across the country on this national day of service.

Also joining the event was Operation HOPE, an organization that assists in financial and economic recovery from natural disasters.

The 30 volunteers added medical alert and information cards into thousands of emergency preparedness booklets developed by the Bergen County Health Department. They also helped prepare a survey mailing that will go out to over 2,000 county residents affected by Superstorm Sandy.

Interested in doing your part, like the Duttas? This and other projects are ongoing and volunteers interested in helping can visit www.bergenvoad.org for more information.
