River Edge Eagle Scout Earns Project of the Year Award

Christopher Fong of Troop 184 in River Edge organized a school supply collection drive that benefitted kids in the Dominican Republic, Virginia and New Jersey.

A local Eagle Scout has had his work deemed the best of the best.

Christopher Fong of Troop 184 in River Edge had his eagle service project selected from hundreds of submissions as the Glen A. and Melinda W. Adams NNJC Eagle Scout Project of the Year.  Fong was honored Jan. 9 at the annual Northern New Jersey Council Eagle Recognition Dinner.

Officials said Fong's project involved collecting school supplies for a school in the Dominican Republic. His project was a town-wide, multi-day, door-to-door collection drive.  On the last weekend in September, volunteers delivered flyers to 3,200 homes in River Edge.  The following weekend, they collected over 350 bags and boxes of donations which contained thousands of school supplies.

The Rotary Club of Bergen Community College, which facilitated shipping the supplies, said Fong's collection made it possible to send supplies to additional schools in need.  To date, supplies were sent to schools in the Dominican Republic, Norfolk, Va., Elmwood Park and Paterson.

The Northern NJ Council spans Bergen, Essex, Hudson and Passaic counties.
