Oradell Woman Honored by CarePlus NJ for Leadership and Advocacy

Julia Orlando will be honored at a May 29 gala for her leadership and advocacy for programs and services that support the mental health care needs of others.

Three Bergen County women will be honored at a May 29 gala for their contributions in support of CarePlus NJ, an advocate and provider of mental health services.

The 15th annual Courage Awards, to be held at the Venetian in Garfield, will honor Julia Orlando, Director of the Bergen County Housing, Health, and Human Services, along with former Care Plus Foundation chairperson Mary Ann Uzzi of Paramus and Nancy Schuring, owner of Wyckoff’s Devon Fine Jewelry.

Orlando, as director of the Bergen County Housing, Health, and Human Services Center, and as an appointee to Governor Chris Christie’s Interagency Council to End Homelessness, has been recognized as a leader in addressing homelessness through temporary shelter, placement, and prevention programs.

Uzzi, a six-year trustee of the CarePlus board, has been a prolific fundraiser for causes ranging from the Japanese Earthquake Relief Fund to local food pantries.

Schuring’s philanthropy has taken her from New Jersey volunteer work to Madagascar, where a trip to purchase gems inspired her to begin the Devon Foundation, providing gem-cutting training and scholarships to East Africans working toward careers in the industry.

In the last two years, she and her store have donated over $20,000 in diamonds to be raffled in support of CarePlus NJ, which provides mental health services to New Jersey residents.

“Each of the women represent all that is good about the work that we do and the people we touch,” Care Plus CEO Joseph Masciandaro said. “Their tireless efforts on behalf of others is a culture that we have eveloped at CarePlus, and to honor their efforts is a privilege.”
