Volleyball Claims Division Title with Wins over Rivals

Each week, Patch will look back at how the Hawks and Crusaders performed on the field

With Mary Maccabee back in the line-up this week, the Lady Hawks volleyball team which has gone undefeated in the Patriot Division play handed their returning hitter the Division title this week following wins over rivals Ramsey (25-14, 25-15) and Mahwah (25-20, 25-12). The 10-0 Lady Hawks (6-0 division play) were a runner-up in the Clarkstown South (NY) gold bracket tournament after falling to Minisink (NY) 18-25. The day-long tournament featured 24 teams from New York and New Jersey to benefit cystic fibrosis. 

For the third year in a row, the Golden Hawks gridiron squad have made sure that the Bird Bowl trophy stays in Oradell as River Dell downed Westwood, 28-0 and retain their undefeated 4-0 record. Anthony Natasi had a 4-yard and 1-yard run to pick up two TD’s for the Hawks. Max Cepeda caught a 39 yard pass and Ryan Duran scooted in two yards to round out the score. Kicker Ben Shapiro stayed cool and collected with a perfect 100% finish with four extra points.

Following their late upset to St. Joseph Regional previously, Bergen Catholic was deteremined to rebound and on Senior Day, the red and gold did so in an impressive fashion 62-20 over Passaic Tech. After being tied mid-way through the 2nd quarter at 14-14, the Crusader offense erupted for 42 unanswered points. Senior quarterback Jon Germano threw for 5 touchdowns (JJ Kulcsar (2), James Dawson, Eddie Sisca, and Johnny Sebastian), while Dawson ran for over 100 yards picking up two more touchdowns for Bergen.

On the pitch, Bergen Catholic picked up three more wins this week including their opening County Tournament run. The team shut out Old Tappan (2-0), squeeked by Northern Highlands (3-2) and advanced over Demarest (2-0) in Counties. Erick Alonso and Armin Grossrieder had two goals this week, with Travis Nitti, Cameron Zamanian and Louis Siracusano rounding out the offensive machine.

The Lady Hawks soccer team also advanced to the next round in the County Tournament, overcoming a scrappy Lyndhurst squad as Frankie Maier and Jamie Woods scored in the second half. Maier then led the Lady Hawks to a 1-1 with rival Ramsey.

River Dell boys soccer were unable to capitalize in their opening County game falling to Garfield 3-0 after previously upsetting Ramsey, 2-1, in the regular season to start the week.

River Dell field hockey starts their County run this weekend after spliting their regular season series in a loss to Northern Highlands (2-0) and tying Lakeland 1-1 as Marine Reilly netted the equalizer in the second half. Goalie Emily Rizzo finished with 13 saves this week.

Cross country duo Emily Croonquist and Marisa Wozniak spent this week proving they are forces to be reckoned with after competing in the Maroon Invitation as Croonquist won the individual title and Wozniak followed in at 11th. The duo then placed back-to-back in River Dell's 21 to 36 regular season win over Pascack Hills. Kristen Choo earned the number three spot.

River Dell boys also defeated the Cowboys this wekk 22 to 33 with Stefan Schuster coming in at 17:48, a mere 17 seconds ahead of the first Cowboy. Timothy Olsen followed at 18:31 and William Daly finished in 18:33.

Bergen Catholic finishes 3-1 in divisional play after their 15 to 46 win over DePaul this week.

River Dell tennis fell in the team state sectionals match against Demarest 5-0 this week as their regular season games were postponed.
