Swimming Draws Tough State Loss, Finishes Regular Season on High Note

Hawks, Crusaders matmen battle to respective wrestling finals

Heading into their North 1 Public A quarterfinals appearance, the Lady Hawks drew one of the toughest opponents in the state, top-seeded Westfield. And while the Lady Hawks fell 129-41 to the Blue Devils, River Dell finished the season on a high note, topping neighboring Paramus 112-58.

The Lady Hawks were led by Gabi Denicola (200 Free, 100 Fly), Maddy Toohey (50 Free, 100 Free), Lienne Barrise (100 Back), Emily Reynolds (100 Breast stroke) and the relay teams of Laurel Passaretti, Barrise, Denicola, and Toohey in the 200 Free relay and the 400 Free Relay squad of Maddy Pizzuto, Denicola, Reynolds and Toohey.

Wrestling

River Dell just survived their semifinal meeting with West Essex for a 33-30 victory as Tyler Kallensee (5:02 tech. fall), Nick Baranello (10-2 maj. dec), Drew Nirchio (5:20 pin), DJ Tirelli (0:08 pin), Danny Lynch (3:44 pin), Cenzo Cariddi (1:26 pin) and Carlo Zazzaro (forfeit) led the way. River Dell faced top-seeded High Point on Friday night in the North 1 Group 2 finals.

Bergen Catholic handed St. Joseph Regional a 35-18 decision in the North Non Public A semifinals and faced Don Bosco Friday evening in the finals. Leading the charge were Nick Suriano (1:55 pin), Matt Rose (2-1 dec.), Laurien Anghelina (forfeit), Joe Grello (0:57 pin), Kevin Mulligan (11-5 dec.), Johnny Sebastian (5:20, 22-2 tech. fall), Christian Jenco (7-2 dec.) and Carmine Goldsack (7-2 dec.).

Swimming

Bergen Catholic breezed into the Non Public North A semifinals after the Crusaders defeated Paramus Catholic 101-69, but were just outpaced by St. Peter's Prep, 87-83 in the semis.

Diving in against the Paladins were Ralph Cannarozzi (50 Free, 100 Free), Josh Sembrano (100 Fly), Liam Kelly (100 Back), and Sebastian Lopez (100 Breast stroke). The red and gold relay teams were also clutch as Sembrano, Cannarozzi, Lopez and Kelly swept the 200 medey and repeated in the 200 and 400 free relays with the help of Anthony Bradshaw and Rob Farrell.

Basketball

The Golden Hawks had a rough week on the hardwood staring with an 80-42 loss to Paramus Catholic in the Bergen Invitational Tournament. From there, things continued to go downhill as River Dell fell to Dwight Morrow (67-64) and Ridgefield Park (71-37).

The Lady Hawks etched out a 53-39 victory over Dwight Morrow but the celebration was short lived as River Dell fell to Ridgefield Park in the final minutes, 36-33.

Bergen Catholic was unable to handle St. Joseph Regional's full court press and costly turnovers in the final quarter doomed the Crusaders 58-47. The loss ended BC's five-game win streak at home during senior night.

Bowling

Bergen Catholic was able to finish third overall in the North 1A Group 4 Tournament in Hackensack this week with 2,840 points as Simon Lezaja rolled a high series 691 to place sixth overall in the individual section with teammate Freddy Dressel’s 674 placing him in eight.

Indoor Track

During the Garfield Classic qualifers, River Dell's Austin Berniger (28-ft shot put), Brandon Jurasin (12-ft high jump) and Laura Oh (30-ft shot put) threw and jumped their way into the next round.
