Germano Named NJ 2012 Gatorade Football Player of the Year

For the first time in 12 years, Bergen Catholic has had a student-athlete named Gatorade Player of the Year

Bergen Catholic senior quarterback and Hawthorne native Jonathan Germano has been named the 2012 Gatorade Football Player of the Year, the first such honor for a student-athlete in Bergen Catholic’s storied football program.

Germano has enjoyed an amazing three-year varsity career for the Crusaders, rewriting the record books when it comes to the quarterback position, as he will leave as the school’s all-time leader in career passing touchdowns, yards, and completions.

“The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Germano as New Jersey’s best high school football player,” according to the official Gatorade press release.

“Jon Germano is a natural leader and of the best student-athletes to ever come through the halls of Bergen Catholic," said head coach Nunzio Campanile. "He has garnered his storied school records in less than two full seasons as Bergen Catholic’s quarterback. He was a converted safety and had not played the quarterback position since he was in the third grade before he won the position prior to the start of the 2011 season.”

Germano becomes the first Bergen Catholic student-athlete to win a Gatorade Player of the Year Award since Alecko Eskandarian ’00 was awarded the 1999 Gatorade National Soccer Player of the Year Award.
