Crusaders Add Two Varsity Squads for 2012-13 Year

Bergen Catholic will debut two new athletic teams this season: Ski during the winter and Crew in the spring

announced this week the addition of two new teams to its Athletics Program, as the Crusader Ski and Crew teams will debut this coming school year on the varsity level. The Ski team will compete in the 2012-2013 winter season, while the Crew team will compete in the spring of 2013.

“We are extremely excited to be expanding our Athletic Department offerings this school year with the addition of two new sports ski and crew," Athletic Director Jack McGovern said. "In keeping with our mission of developing the whole student, these new additions will offer even more opportunities for our students to compete for our school against some of the best competition available.”

The Ski Team will compete as part of the NJ Interscholastic Ski Racing Association along with other Non-Public rivals, Don Bosco Prep and Delbarton. Scott Savage has been named as the team’s inaugural head coach.

Bergen Catholic’s Crew team represented the school as a club sport in 2012 and participated in the at Overpeck Park in Ridgefield Park last April. At the regatta, the Crusaders club team was led by team captain Simon Lezaja who took first place in the single rowers final with a time of 6:41.30, the two four-man teams of Smith/Weisbecker/Ciongoli/Niece and Harte/Kobierowski/Luglio/Jost placed second and third in the Novice 4x finals in 5:51.05 and 6:38.91 respectively. Mike Travaline has been appointed as the team’s head coach.

“The added offerings may encourage student-athletes already on other teams in our school to become multi-sport athletes, or possibly bring someone out for a sport who may have not found his competitive niche yet," McGovern said. "We are managing this process in a way that hopefully ensures a great foundation for these two new programs to flourish, much like the 15 others we currently support.”

Both of the new Crusader sports teams will hope to emulate the successes of the last sports team to be added at Bergen, the volleyball program, which has risen to become a top 10 program in the state in only four years of existence since its start in 2008.

With the addition of these two new teams, Bergen Catholic will now offer its student-athletes the opportunity to compete in 17 various interscholastic sports.
