Bonfiglio Named Assistant Superintendent at River Dell

Business Administrator will serve in dual-role

River Dell Business Administrator Thomas Bonfiglio will return to the schools halls with an additional title after last night's River Dell Board of Education decision add Assistant Superintendent to his title.

Board members also voted to approve Bonfiglio's contract for July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012 as the Board Administrator. His role as Assistant Superintendent was approved for September 1, 2011 through July 13, 2013.

The vote, which came at the end of a lengthy meeting, followed an Executive Session discussion prior to the 8pm start time of the meeting. Although not all of the Board of Ed members were in agreement that a vote should be taken as attempts were made to table each resolution.

"I don't think it changes the approval we have of Tom, but i feel we owe it to the public to give them notice of this," Oradell Board member Roger Tashjian said.

Also in agreement with Tashjian were fellow Oradell Board members Michael Chakansky and Dorothea Durand. According to Superintendent Patrick Fletcher though, the Board could approve items that were discussed in Executive Session during the public meeting.

Each time a motion was made to table the vote, it fell 6-3 with Tashjian, Chakansky and Durand as the 'nay' voters.

"This came out of the blue and there was very little discussion previously," Durand said regarding the change to Bonfiglio's title. "I think this needed to be vetted better before we add a new position to the district."

While his new role was approved, the Policy Committee will take a second look at the job description for an Assistant Superintendent as it is a new position to the district.

Bonfiglio came to River Dell in 1996 and earns on average as the Board Admistrator $150,110 according to the 2011-12 River Dell Regional School budget.

It's "interesting" how this writer positions Durand, Chakansky and Tashjian as "nay voters" when they should be called "the responsible voters." They were voting based on facts and the need for more information. They were voting with the best interests of the students and tax payers in mind. As for the other board members...the 5 blind mice and Barnes....shame on them. And seriously? we have to hire someone to take meeting minutes because Bonfiglio can't/won't?
