Someone I recently met was telling me that he was having a work life balance problem. I listened to him for awhile, and told him that work life balance issues aren't a problem. They are a symptom.
Working too many hours, not taking vacations, and not unplugging enough is caused by something else. Maybe by a culture that values face-time over productivity. Or hyper competitive people who think they have to show their commitment by staying longer in the office than anyone else. Possibly it's related to insecurity on the part of the person who's life is out of balance. Or it could be a buffet of these issues, mixed in with a few others.
