Bank Robber Nabbed One Week After River Edge Heist

Following a weeklong investigation into the , arrested Darrel Johnson, 29, of Englewood late Wednesday at a Hackensack apartment. Johnson, who has been charged with one count of robbery, was remanded to the Bergen County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.

During the robbery, Johnson allegedly entered the   and presented a bank teller with a note which contained a specific demand for cash, and had indicated that he was armed with a weapon. He had fled the bank on foot towards Hackensack with an undisclosed amount of cash.

At the time he was described as a 6'0" dark skin male wearing a brown hooded jacket, glasses and material covering the lower portion of his face.

"The Bergen County Sheriff’s Department under the command of Sheriff Michael Saudino provided invaluable assistance in developing Johnson as a suspect in the robbery," River Edge Police Chief Thomas Cariddi wrote in a press release. "As a result of cooperative efforts from investigators from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and from the Englewood, Teaneck, and Hackensack Police Departments, Johnson was traced to a Hackensack apartment."

During that time River Edge Detective Sergeant Curt Wilhelm and Detective Michael Varrecchia, along with Hackensack Detective William Inglima and Detective Matt Sweatits arrested Johnson without incident at the apartment.

River Edge municipal Judge Bruce Safro issued a $200,000 with no 10% option bail for Johnson. He was subsequently remanded to the Bergen County Jail in lieu of bail.
