Behind the Scenes of a Cake Designer: Here's How We Made Our 3D Camera Cake!

We get a lot of requests for custom 3D cakes for birthdays or groom's cakes for weddings. We took photos of the process of creating a custom camera birthday cake NJ.

We get a lot of requests for custom 3D cakes for birthdays or groom's cakes for weddings. We took photos of the process of creating a custom camera birthday cake NJ.

STEP ONE: It's important to start by getting the correct dimensions for the cake. Start by getting photo from the Internet and scale those dimensions up to a cake size that will give you the number of servings you need.

STEP TWO: You can blow up the photos to the size of the cake to use as templates for carving. We based one large cake and cut into three rectangles (for the camera body) and three circles (for the lens).

STEP THREE: Then we begin filling and stacking the cake layers. Wrap and refrigerate the cake at this point before carving because a chilled cake is easier to carve.

STEP FOUR: Once the cake is chilled, we use the templates as a guide for carving. Take a little off at a time. Look at the cake from all angles to ensure you accommplished a realistic camera shape. Then crumb coat the entire cake and
chill again.

STEP FIVE: Put a final smooth coat of icing on the cake and once chilled cover with fondant.  Put all the little details on the cake with fondant additions are emboss lines into the cake.  The little details provides realism to the final cake.  Here's our Nikon D700 custom cake.
