Lady Hawks Move Closer to State Sectionals

Girl's Basketball continues improving their season for NJSIAA State Sectionals

The River Dell Lady Hawks improved their season to 19-3 on Tuesday night with a 53-39 victory against the Dwight Morrow Raiders as senior Kayla McGovern led the way with a game high 22 points.

The Raiders may have started off with the hot hand nabbing possession early but McGovern quickly became the Lady Hawks ace and putting up points for the lead.

She later secured the first quarter 12-6 lead after Christine Woods forced a turnover by blocking a shot from Sabrine Defreese. River Dell continued to add to their lead as Kayleen Melvin and Emma O'Connor banked 11 and eight points respetively.

O'Connor wrapped up the third quarter with a pair of consecutive three-pointers with just seconds left and began the final period with a pair of free throws.

“I feel really good about our team’s performance tonight.” O’Connor said. “I’m so proud to be on this team for my senior year we all contribute and follow this new saying ‘all in.’ We really all support each other and try to pick up a player when she needs it. Dwight Morrow’s a tough team, but we were confident since we played them last time and pulled out a win.”

As the Lady Hawks only have three more games left of their regular season they are still trying to improve.

“We are now 19-3 and our next goal is to get 20 wins for the season.” O’Connor said.

Their final regular season games include heading to Ridgefield Park on Feb. 14, 7pm and then returning home for the remainder against Dumont on Feb. 19, 7pm and Union City, Feb. 21, 6pm.

Granted the number three seed in the North 1 Group 3 state tournament, the Lady Hawks will open their first run at home against Demarest on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 7pm.
