After years of poor maintenance by the River Edge senior bus drivers, the borough is now faced with the reality of auctioning off one bus after the discovery that the frame and chassis has major rust issues. The 2001 Ford bus was primarily purchased through a Community Development Block Grant for $48,000 with the borough contributing a portion of funds.
This week Gov. Chris Christie's administration and the Department of Environmental Protection announced the award of nearly $16 million in Clean Communities grants to help municipalities and counties fund litter cleanup efforts that help beautify New Jersey’s communities and roadsides. The DEP awarded $13.86 million to 559 eligible municipalities. Among this year's recipients were Oradell with $12,953.08 and River Edge with $15,643.05.
The Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders will make their final decision on the allocation of at its June 20 meeting following Monday evenings public hearing.
"I listened very hard to the residents of Oradell and members from historic preservation for the Waterworks property to restore full funding," Freeholder John Felice said. "On June 20 each Freeholder will have the opportunity to vote on the allocations."
For residents on Voorhis Avenue in River Edge between Bogert and Elm Avenues, torrential downpours can be a nightmare as inadequate drainage systems lead to flooding issues. And while the council placed $100,000 in the towards alleviating the problem, the borough may now seek a Department of Transportation grant to assist in covering the sewer upgrades.
