Roberto's Pizza Returns, More Snow, Special Needs Housing and DeMenna Dons Crusader Red Top This Week's News

After an eight year break in the pizza business, Roberto and Francine Maglocchetti decided they couldn't stay away any longer. The longtime River Edge residents recently opened the River Edge Pizza Kitchen on Kinderkamack Road two weeks ago.

Taking over the space vacated by Forero's New York Gourmet Pizzeria, the Maglocchetti's are hoping to capitalize on their popularity in town after once owning Roberto's Pizza further north on Kinderkamack Road.

With more than a foot of snow dumped on parts of Bergen County in Friday’s storm, many families decided there was only one thing to do Saturday – go out and play in it.

With a growing population of young adults with developmental disabilities, a first draft plan byUnited Way to construct four special needs housings on Kinderkamack Road is heading back to the drafting table.

United Way is seeking to purchase the under utilized borough parking lot on the main thoroughfaire between Mackay and Winne avenues and just below Meyerhoff Place and construct housing similar to their Allendale and Ramsey projects.

Facing an upcoming complex web of new education reforms, the Regional School District is hoping to get a jump start during the remaining school year and work towards crafting a three-year plan.

The plan, which has yet to be drafted, would include how the district will handle the many reforms that are expected within the next two years. Among the upcoming education reforms are a change in teacher evaluations, new student achievement requirements in standardized testing and a switch to the Common Core Curriculum.

Facing new scenarios for possible disaster, the River Edge Office of Emergency Management hopes to resurrect a multi-department drill this spring.

The borough OEM previously held town-wide training for several years but had cut back over time due to the cost of hosting the program. Current OEM coordinator Tom Smith has proposed resuming training this spring and return to making it an annual occurence.

A handful of white pines by the borough tennis courts are now facing the axe as River Edge considers utilizing part of its 2013 Open Space Trust Fund to replace the offending trees.

The white pines, which have been identified as causing damage to the courts by dripping sap, could  to remove and replace with a set of holly bushes in their place.
