Non-Profit to Bring Low Cost Senior Housing to St. Peter's

Build with Purpose is bringing 25 senior housing units to River Edge for a fraction of the average cost

With an ever growing senior population in Bergen County, a New Jersey based non-profit organization will soon be concluding the redevelopment of a former River Edge convent into a senior residence.

Build with Purpose's latest project has been to transform the St. Peter the Apostle Parish convent on 445 5th Avenue into a home for 25 local seniors by April 2013.

“We’ve come to learn that many seniors can’t afford or simply don’t want to live alone, and many can’t afford the high cost of traditional for-profit assisted living facilities. We think this approach will help to fill the gap between living alone and assisted living,” says Brian Keenan, Director & President of Build with Purpose.

With that in mind, the real estate development and consulting firm created the senior residence concept which would afford seniors a warm, safe and comfortable place to live and still be able to stay in their hometown.

The housing facility, built to hold 25 residents, is located between the St. Peter Church and nearby Van Saun Park. Independent seniors will be provided with much of the same care and services offered in a traditional assisted living facility including three meals a day, housekeeping, transportation, recreation, private rooms and 24-hour on-site staff.

Personal care assistance for residents who may need help with daily routines such as dressing, bathing and grooming, cleaning, and other tasks will also be offered.

According to Build with Purpose, the monthly costs at St. Peter’s Residence will start at $1,900, a fraction of the state average of $4,286 for assisted living facilities.

The organization will be hosting several open houses during December for local seniors to tour the units.
